Re: Gremlins in my 12k white gold?

Thanks for the replies! I wonder if it's patent leaf? If it comes off the tissue while pressing then it may be? Hi Terry! Funny thing is that it sort of behaved as if it were in between patent and loose. I bought it labelled loose and it comes in the loose leaf book (no transfer sheet) but it would ...

Gremlins in my 12k white gold?

Hello! Hoping that this is just an anomaly and that someone might have some info. Has anyone ever have white gold (or other quality) refuse to leave the book except in rags or pieces? I’m steady enough to lift and lay full leaves without messing up too often. So I opened a new book of 12k this week,...

I’m pretty religious about this kind of stuff usually and i skipped the mask this afternoon and regretted it on my way home when i noticed i was swaying a little... Second the 3M mask, i use one whenever i have open cans in my shop (15 msq) or on site work with the solvent enamels. Even if i do spra...

Re: Window Sign Writing Paints

I agree with Dougs advice, test it first a couple of times! I've tried one brand of latex artist color (Flash or Flashe i think) and while its pretty good for lettering on glossy paper it was not good for glass. The paint crept back together into streaky beads not even half a second after it left th...

Its probably a gilded hot dog that! Or maybe its at the first gas stop after a VERY long unpopulated stretch.? Neil, i strongly advise you to clear the shed and make a space, i did it in my basement storage, pretty sweet to have the stuff close and on hand without fussing about tidying it up or fumi...

Re: ClearCoat over 23k Goldleaf

Nice work! Just a curiosity: Was the transom already coated in some kind of varnish or did you work directly on the "naked" wood? Two reasons for asking: 1) I keep thinking it'd look pretty cool to do a job like this on top of a few millimeters of transparent surface, so as to seem floatin...

Re: Noob - After some easel advice.

I've tried using one of those three leg easels and using the mahlstick with that was time consuming and tricky. Maybe one of those large "studio artist" ones would be better? I recently built one like you said, out of a 2.4x1.2m MDF board and a attached framework of 2"x1" timber ...

Re: Reverse job on double-glazed windows

Sorry guys, forgot to post how it actually turned out. We agreed to make the blue a bit darker for contrast. Tried adding red in the white and i thought it looked a little more subdued somehow, and the standard white wasnt affected as bad as i thought by the greenish tint of the glass so i opted for...

Re: Reverse job on double-glazed windows

only one way to know...put a smear of paint on the back and go outside and take a look...only way to assess if you need to adjust the color. I sometimes do this with pale colors, especially white, and will sometimes adding a little extra red to counter the green cast of standard float glass. You ca...

Re: Clean up strokes

I'm left handed as well. Having you thumb on the wrong side of your dominate hand can make it difficult to emulate a right hander's style. You will have to improvise as you improve. I always use a mahl stick and hold my paint and palette in my right hand, for instance. I work from left to right but...

Re: Graffiti on Historic Ghost Sign

2 cents from a "vandal" (i do legal stuff, period): Having many years experience with graffiti and spray i can say most paints sold today used for graffiti are specialist graffiti paints, almost every single maker uses some sort of acetone solvent for their sprays, unless they have used wh...

Beautiful kit, very cool!

Those automatic brushes look like ancestors to the Marsh brand fountain brushes, used for stenciling with thick industrial strength inks.

Re: Covering a whole window with 1Shot

This sounds like a viable option especially if air flow is allowed between the panel and the glass. I also like the idea of the extra depth for the scroll. Thinking on your feet or just plain planning ahead results in a more profitable project. Thanks for your input and corroboration Kent! Hopefull...

Re: Covering a whole window with 1Shot

Thanks to everybody for the info and the warnings! A quick scouting revelaed that the window in question is double (maybe even triple) hardened glass that is designed to keep the temperature loss at a minimum, wich i guess only increases the possibility of it trapping potentially dangerous amounts o...

Re: First gild job

Lorenzo, It looks nice. Is the first letter 1Shot red with gold outline? Then the rest is gold letters with black o/l and shade? Why 2 layers of gold leaf? If there were pinholes in the first layer, using silver or gold for the backup paint would hide them. Also, spinning the gold will hide a multi...

Not much to add to this except that Inkscape was recommended to me for vector graphics if that's what you're looking for? Wouldn't recommend it to any Mac users though, i spent more time having technical issues with it than actually using it for work and ended up buying an Illustrator license after ...

First gild job

Hello! Some time ago i did my first gilding for a pub/cafè, former employers giving me a chance to get out there on the market. Below is the result, i was hoping i could get some feedback on it? Pictures might not be the best, i've got a good camera now and i'll be posting better shots asap. One sho...

Re: Covering a whole window with 1Shot

Lorenzo, If you have Frazee paint available they make a line called AeroPlate enamel. Just make sure you add a hot thinner to it to add in drying. I would also use a roller and tape off the window around the outside as a stopping point so you don't have to go right up to the edges. I'll look into t...

Hi Lorenzo, In the past I have done the same thing with success. I would concider finding some industrial enamel paint that will be compatible with one shot because it may be less expensive. Good luck Thanks Roderick, feels good to know that it's been done and successfully! Off the bat i'm thinking...

Covering a whole window with 1Shot

The reason apparently is because it lets in the wrong kind of light (the sharp straight into your eyes variety) and ...

Yeah that was awesome, kinda stunned over here. Is it me being gullible and believing the magic of television or did you actually do the two-tone gold on the glass before you gilded it, or did you do it the "regular" way by using two different types of leaf, and/or sizes? I'm thinking etch...

Baby socks, soft cloth - check! I'll try that, i'm about to bring some heavy powdercloud-justice down in the search for the ultimate pouncebag. Steel wool, i'll try that! My dad went on about grandpa using cotton as padding as well. I'm thinking a layered combo of both, and perhaps even adding a kit...
