Re: Quills

Regular old mineral oil from walgreens works fine and is dirt cheap. My mentor Harry has been using it for 20+ years.

Re: Gold Spray Paint?

Hey guys... Yes the Modern Masters paint works well, did the entire Denver Botanical Gardens' info stands in it and hadn't gotten any complaints. We used the copper color. It thins with water and we cleared it too with I think Modern Masters satin clear. They were quite durable and easy to paint.

Re: Gold pinstriping paint?

When I was up in Vermont I was lucky enough to get to put the striping back onto restored Harleys from the 20s and 30s, and they all had some sort of gold striping on them. I tried the "mix-n-stripe" method and found it alright, but it didn't flow from the brush well and was hard to pallet...

WOW Bob, glad to see you are still doing the great hand-work you love to do. It's been years and years since I met you and saw you last (when I was dating Gail Cullen's niece), at that time you were doing some computer work... I'm glad you didn't go the way of Bill Bergen! Drop me a note, it'd be gr...

Hey guys... I totally agree, and great writing by Kent! A couple years ago when I had regular work coming in, the prices of gas shot up to $2.80 and over $3, so I added $25 to my hourly charge. Here a single bell pepper is $2.99! In California it was $2.99 a pound! It all seems like every price is j...

Price of Gold

Hey all, Been gone for a while and have only done 1 small gilding job in the last year since I left San Francisco (where I was laying some Hastings leaf!), but I have seen the price of gold almost double in the last year (by the ounce price). How has this effected the price of gold leaf? I have a co...

I have a copy of the video... Harry, my mentor, was a huge fan and after Mike died, Harry somehow found out that his sister had a few copies left and bought one. I now have it and want to get it burned onto DVD.
It was as exciting as Mike said it was... but he was a brush master as was Al Zannetti.

A trick I learned... This is from a post I did a while back after visiting Glen Weisgerber (known Truck Letterer, Legend, Pinstriper, Myth); {I spend the day at Glen's shop Monday, and he filled me in on his technique for clearing over gold. He lays the gold, then after the gold effects (burnishing)...

One more way of doing it.... I have done quite a few restoration striping jobs on antique Harleys and other bikes and found it was best striping first in Immitation Gold 1-Shot then after about an hour come back with a felt pad and your mica/bronze/etc... and pounce it on top and you will get a bril...

Great question, Glen said he had seen that most clears don't hold onto the gold and the only thing keeping it stuck to the vehicle is around the edges....
