Re: Glue chipping question

Terry, I built a box like Rick's a few years back & it worked with pretty good success. I was talking with Dave Smith about it & he shared his process which uses an old lighted sign box that gently warms the glass & seems to dry the glue from the surface of the glass out. When I used Ric...

Re: Question about quils

Padma, I like the water base brushes by Mack for lettering acrylic paints thinned to lettering consistency. The 2179 series is what I use & I believe they are a synthetic/natural blend of bristles and are a very nice brush. Try them, & try to omit the scolding next time. ;) Good luck, & ...

I saw this on ebay Last night & thought you guys might like to have a look. I know Robare has a copy of one of these, but I would live to see an original, myself. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=350559238250&si=mMQiEFHUo4D...

Rod, Shipping for me (to Pittsburgh, PA) has been the same every time, whether I ordered 1 pack or 3, at $50 via FedEx insured. And, packaging is the plain wrappings without an envelope, so you probably won't like that part, but you get a complimentary tin when you order more than a book. http://www...

Re: Gold Leaf

Rod, I think your math is off a little. If the exchange is .6076 for Stirling to Dollar then 1 GBP = 1.65 USD then the book would cost $22.52 each or $450.40 per pack. Using an online currency converter... http://www.xe.com/ucc/ you can see the exchange fo exact amounts. If I use my credit card to m...

Vance, I have had the same problem & the thing that works best for me is putting glass floral beads (about the size of a lima bean) glass floral beads.jpg in the pint can to replace any size I used. The idea was to displace as much of the air in the can as possible to prevent the size from gelli...

Bruce, Thanks for sharing photos of these gems, I think this is invaluable information to be documented. I found more old photos of similar jars I had seen while on a trip to Ireland, actually right around the corner from the pub I had mentioned in another post. https://handletteringforum.com/forum/...

Bruce, I finally dug up this photo from 2003. I was visiting Peter McCullen in Dublin & he took me down to Kilkenny to have a look at some of the work he had done with Eoin Quigly. This is from a pub called Langtons & the owner ordered hand gilded mirrors & they did the entire bar back i...

Re: Light Box chipping table

Ingrid, I used fluorescent bulbs for the box I made & they do let off a small amount of heat. What I noticed when I put the glue on the warm glass, the glue would flow out nicely, compared to putting it on cold glass. The temp at my shop is kept around 64 degrees & having the glass warmed ve...

Re: Light Box chipping table

Larry, The notched spreader worked great for spreading the glue evenly over the glass, & the warmth of the light box helped keep the glue from quickly gelling up. To simply answer your question, yes. I poured the glue onto the glass, using the 3/16 edge of the spreader, spread the glue all over ...

Re: Light Box chipping table

Larry, I made what I thought was more than enough glue. If you can see in the top photo, there is a piece of mask release liner leftover from the job. Whatever glue I have left, I'll pour out on the liner & spread into a thin layer & it will dry the same way as the glue on the glass, just wo...

Light Box chipping table

Well, with the advice of Dave Smith I went & built a light box over one of my work tables at the studio. I had a glass transom to chip for a customer & the old box I built from Ricks plans I usually used to gluechip glass worked well, but I wanted to give this a try, plus I'd have a good lig...

Lars,
On the cover, it reads, "32 tafeln originel-entwürfe".
I don't know what that translates to in english, but there are 32 color plates in the collection located in the flicker collection.

Lorne, When we lettered basketballs for the local school, many times the oneshot would not dry at all. Our solution was coating with a clear water based sealer, specifically ti-coat by Chromatic.
