Re: painting on awnings

Yvette, Get the sample and try some 100% acrylic paint such as Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint or A-100 or something similar. We letter many Sunbrella awnings using high performance vinyl as mask. The paint adheres tenaciously to the vinyl mask. It might to the awing material. You could also try TiCote,...

Re: Corafoam Adhesives testing

PL Premium is a construction adhesive that comes in caulking tubes. I've gotten it at Lowe's and I think, Home Depot. It's phenomenally strong. I use it when gluing limestone sign panels to backgrounds since the acetic acid in silicone attacks the limestone causing premature failure. PL will yellow ...

Re: Corafoam Adhesives testing

PL Premium is awesome adhesive but it is not rated for unfinished Aluminum. The Aluminum must at least be primed with an etching primer. It will turn loose from bare Aluminum in a couple years.

I priced some the other day at Art Essentials and it has doubled from the last pack I bought. He told me the real driving force in the price increase has been the currency, not the cost of Gold. Either way, the price has to go up to my customers.

Don't leave them on the dash of your truck in the Texas summer either. You'll have a hollow wood tube, more suited for use as a straw. Now, we have to worry about hot Texas winters. Dallas had less than an hour of sub freezing temperature last month--the warmest January on record. I'm using more gre...

Mike,

Chip's headed back your way now. I hope things go smoothly for both of you and may you have a dull, boring summer from here on.

By the way... a word of advice:

Don't leave bear spray on the dash when trout fishing.

Bitstream Font Navigator is a nice utility. You can also organize fonts into various font groups. A font can be shared by several groups. As I have time, I sort my fonts into various families, such as Period Typestyles, Art Deco, Formal, Serif, Western, Scripts, etc. When I'm after a certain flavor ...

I have done glue chipped glass for about 20 years but have not done one recently. For me, the problematical part was getting the glass to chip on any sort of predictable schedule. We found the answer in our small bathroom at the shop. There is a shower stall there about 3' x 3' that has only been us...

Mike, He left a few things here, too. I told him when he was visiting us that my shop will inspire him to write a sequel to his book titled something like: This is NOT How It's Done! I'll probably see him in a few days as he heads back your way. I'm glad everyone has survived the summer so far. Driv...

Primers for Redwood

John, The tannin in the wood is water soluble and will bleed through an almost infinite number of layers of water based paint and leave a darkened stain on your finish. For me, it has only been a problem on light colored areas. If painting a dark background, it is not noticeable. Water based Kilz wo...

Great design is timeless, whether executed via hand or machine. Chester’s work, although done over a quarter century ago, still inspires. I never met Chester but in the early ‘80s I hired a sign painter, Ron Collier, who had worked with Chester in Alabama. Ron had some pictures of Chester’s wo...

Regarding Danny's Eagle CREEK Ranch: Some of my best samples have come from failing to read my own work orders. I like to tell myself they have earned more money than they cost me. Yeah, I'll stick with that story.
