Gold Rush Cigars

GoldRuchCigars1400.jpg I made two or three of these panels and sent one to one of the Conclaves. One of them hangs on my office wall. Today, I was cleaning the sensors on my camera and did a few test shots. The glass piece made a good subject. It was terribly skewed—a result of me snapping the shot...

Re: New member, saying Hi and asking about a font

Neville, Until about 1982 or so, no one had much access to fonts of any kind, much less the ability to digitize our own artwork. If there is a piece of glass with a remaining image, you can put a piece of paper over it and rub across it with a crayon or graphite stick (make a rubbing). It will give ...

Re: Desperate for info!

Chris, The first thing I would question is how well you scrubbed the glass before beginning your project? No telling what kind of silicones, oils, and chemicals are in over the counter cleaners, like Windex. In the old days, Bon-Ami might have been enough, but I wonder if a quick rub with acetone an...

Hi Vance, The phpBB was updated to the newest version, which should mean we won't need to pay to have it updated again for a while. The down side to the new update is there are very few available templates yet. Ryan picked the one he could find that was the closest to what we had on the old server. ...

Re: 2017: Fate of the Handlettering Forum

Andrew, this version of the forum is brand new and it installed with a few default settings. One of them was a limit on the size of the images. I upped it just now, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have a feeling you would be able to pull a photo from your phone via something like DropBox or maybe ...

Hi Andrew, Thanks for making the post...and your comments prompted me to adjust the settings for attachments. It can now handle a full meg file, where before the default size was something like 257k. Re: 2017: Fate of the Handlettering Forum

I received a note from Kent Smith since the original post. He's checking to see if the Denver group still has enough money to cover the $500 costs for the year. Possibly, they only have part of it this year....we'll have to wait and see. Personally, I'd love to see the Forum live on for years, but I...

2017: Fate of the Handlettering Forum

Hi to readers at the venerable old Hand Lettering Forum! I am not exactly sure of the status here. It might be worth adding that the Denver Letterheads has been paying for the majority of the costs for this site for quite a few years. Gum Tragacanth

Atkinson mentions Gum Tragacanth in his book. Back in the early days of Letterheads, we made a vat of water and gum tragacanth, floated paint on the surface, and then dipped panels into it.
