Doug Bernhardt_Retired?!

Received a note from Doug recently, with a photo of Doug's last commercial sign, and a short note of his business: Other than the accolades and that it's actually been 45 years, it is accurate. Time to say bye to sign arts and onto other things... whatever that might be 😳 Doug Bernhardt Signwriting,...

Re: for those that have used metallic surfacers...

Vance, I doubt there's much difference between the two, though I use Sophisticated finishes more than Modern Masters. At one time they were separate companies, but Sophisticated (Triangle Coatings) bought out Modern Masters long ago. Both products consist of a latex carrier with real, atomized metal...

Hi Alfred, add to your original post. Go to the top of the page you posted on, select 'new reply' add your text and more photos. Add more as necessary. What type of lights did you use, they look like LED's? I'm not sure if they put out any heat. Florescent lights are generally used, and put off abou...

Hi Doug, Spectacular work! Ever consider doing it for a living? :) 'it has been a long project. Is sometimes hard to stay focused.' How long is the 'long project'? I understand focus, or the lack thereof. Though my work is nothing like your craft, fortunately or not on larger jobs, the deadlines are...

Re: etched tempered glass problem...

Doug, my thoughts exactly, I've had similar problems. I'd guess the horizontal lines came from either the side slats on the delivery truck, or something that was stacked with the delivery, or during installation. As they were thoroughly examined prior to delivery, the marks were likely made after it...

Vitaly, this thread is a long read but should answer your questions. Rather than build a special cabinet, try a light box as suggested in this thread, along with photos: http://www.handletteringforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3084&hilit=chipping+table Also note, when applying glue, turn the ligh...

Re: The printed image on the signs

Vitaly, what is your primary language? The Ukrainian word for varnish is лак. Varnish is used as a clear adhesive to adhere the print directly to the glass. Another method is to mount the illustration to matt board, or stiff, thin paper, and tape behind the opening. The photo displays a digital prin...

Re: Paints for drawing on the glass on the back side

Vitaly,

search for screen print ink, also know as silk screen ink. Get thinner compatible with your ink, as well as hardener. For a small amount of paint, add 1-2 drops of hardener. Get FDE (fast drying enamel) if available.

Re: LHSS backing black. What that?

Andrey, as Terry posted, LetterHead Sign supply: http://letterheadsignsupply.com/index.php?route=common/home Since you're located in Europe, I'd imagine shipping/customs would add considerably to the cost. An alternative would be screen inks, specifically FDE, which is fast dry enamel, that can be u...

Hi Will, I'll hazard a guess, though most sling a brush considerably more than I: contamination, either in the paint, the brush or the glass itself. I'm sure you've given each some thought, and eliminated them; you're certainly not new to the field as I remember... How old is the paint, have you tri...

The photo shows two vertical pieces of lumber, higher than your ceiling height, that could be wedged between the floor and ceiling,or could be attached to the wall at the top if the ceiling's too high. What's illustrated looks to be 1" x 4s; you'd be better off with 2" x 4s, which would provide a sol...

Trip, the transparent inks are regular transparent screen printing inks by Nazdar, and other screen ink suppliers. They are the most resistant to effects of UV. Most only need a small amount of ink, the minimum order for screen inks are in quarts. Have you checked out Bruce Jackson's site? If not, d...

Yes, it is getting some national news, even from the land of shakes. When the earth moves, nothings going to stop it.

Here's a photo of the house in a local paper, San Francisco Chronicle, probably the same as run in Jackson Hole.
