Costa Rica

Darla and I spent a couple of warm weeks in Costa Rica in January. It was roughly 88 degrees there and -20 degrees here in Jackson Hole during our trip. Easy trade! PolloLoco-1.jpg I snapped a few sign photos while there, including this hand painted one. Tropical-1.jpg Many signs we saw were printed...

Re: The Forum vs Facebook

Normally, the Denver Chapter of the Letterheads sends me a check in January for $400. I use it periodically throughout the year to pay for the domain registration, site storage, and the Wordpress site. If you look at the address bar, this site now has the Secure Site (https) designation, which cost ...

Rick,
Atkinson's book mentions using Gum Tragacanth, which is the solution we used at a few of the early Letterheads meetings.

Re: The Forum vs Facebook

It might be worth adding that the Denver Letterheads has been paying for the majority of the costs for this site for quite a few years. Last year, they suggested it might be their last year to be able to pay the money. I haven't asked about it lately, but it will soon be time to make that decision. ...

Gum Tragacanth

Atkinson mentions Gum Tragacanth in his book. Back in the early days of Letterheads, we made a vat of water and gum tragacanth, floated paint on the surface, and then dipped panels into it. Megan, You can always buy a commercial mirror, then mask the back of it with sandblast stencil. Cut and remove the areas where you will want color and lightly sandblast the backing and silver off the glass. Then just fill in the colors. You won't know it was ever etched and you'll have a perfect mir...

I don't think it will grip the glass, nor flow out to the glass from a brush well enough.

But...you can always try it on a small piece of test glass.

John, When you are researching equipment, you'll want to ask for a compressor that can deliver 100-175 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) at 100 PSI with a 1/4" nozzle. All three of those work together or all three can be manipulated by a salesman. You can maintain pressure and CFM a long time at 1/8" nozz...

Meagan, Have you had good luck "pouring" multiple golds? I assume you are talking about some version of Angel Gilding? Before committing to a large piece like this, I'd experiment on a very small piece. Why? A: Each of the three steps you are talking about requires a VERY clean area of glass. B: Cle...

Trip,
There's nothing wrong with making a pattern via a plotter and then hand lettering it.

I wouldn't let your penmanship dictate whether you can hand paint a sign.

Good luck,
