Mike, the letters pictured were just brushed off well. On HDU if I was going to paint the whole letter,I'd apply the epoxy first. If you wanted a painted letter with a clear face, paint first, epoxy last. It just depends of the effect you want. The epoxy sticks well to wood. as well as most products...

Signmaking 101: Doming dimensional letters
Signmaking 101: Doming dimensional letters If you've ever wanted to dome dimensional letters, here's a quick, inexpensive way to begin. As with any technique you do for the first time, cut several extra letters or shapes, and use those as a test. You'll need a plastic refillable bottle, the type use...

Two possible problems with this auction - for Doug at least. If the lady is on the February issue, February is the only one without a cover, and the seller doesn't ship international shipments. If it has what you want, have someone in the US bid on it for you. Unless I find out it's a rare and valua...

I've wanted one ever since I first saw one in a prop shop. I used it as needed in the shop for about a year. It took a lot of practice, more importantly a lot of patience to do a proficient job. Years later I saw one in a sign supply house that was moving in the early 80's. They had three on the flo...

Mike, Last thing first. Everyone that comes on here can only get here by computer. Like it or not, take away the computer and rely strictly on hand crafted signage, a lot of us would be looking for another job. No need to delete this post OR consider it off topic. You might want to try the UV glues. After Mike posted information on the old board, I ordered some glue and a small light. For those that bought a hand light to check the clean side of glass in angle gilding from Rick, the same light can be used to cure the glue. The shop where I get my beveled glas...

I remember seeing similar plans and eventually built a overarm pin router for a job that required several hundred game boards. The pin router seemed the best answer. It got to the point we were making so many I bought a commercial unit. Aside from the table saw, at the time it was the most useful ma...

Signmaking 101: Routers, router bits and CNC's
Anyone that cuts many panels or does dimensional work probably has a router in their shop. Many shops have now incorporated CNC equipment. How do you maintain your equipment, including sharpening bits? Here are some things to consider: 1. Check the collet frequently for dust build up within the coll...

Well, after a month it should be dry. You might try tech support again. Call MacTac and HOK. Not familiar with nor used the mask, but the rest of the line has been around for decades, and have had good success with it. If nothing else, it would be nice to find out exactly what took place, and what p...

Jill, was the paint fully cured before the mask was applied, and how long was the mask on prior to removal? Was it indoors or out? Apply it and let it sit outside will bake any mask / vinyl onto fresh paint. I've only used HOK on a limited basis, and believe most of their paint is a one part system....

At Rick's last Conclave (who'd have known?), Dave Trujillo (spl?) had just finished a glass piece for himself that was mounted in an ornate, gilded frame. He was working on the frame at the time which was quite bright, toning it down with several dilutions of asphaltum. It aged the new frame nicely....

The chemicals can be stored at room temperature, but at the least I'd keep them in a cool, dark cabinet. I refrigerate mine. Gold chemicals have an indefinite shelf life, but the silver Sarah sells probably has a shelf life of one year. Light and heat in that order will shorten the shelf life. If le...

It's a pure, fine powdered porcelain clay. In the case of applying a mask as in routing, applying the powder to the panel, then dusting off will aid in removal of the gerber mask. When used in masking for the router, rouge can also be use with the same results. And if your wondering why not use gerb...

My first suggestion is to do a test piece. The process is not fast and I usually allow a considerable lead time. It provides good, consistent results. Here's what I did with the following panel: Route the blank, apply two coats of primer, two coats of acrylic latex and let sit for a week. I mask the...

The sizes I'm doing are considerably larger than what I've done in the past mainly because of the pictures you've posted with your project. Rick's influence continues. T...

Larry, my thought is that the shellac would be a better barrier for the next stages of ornamentation and eliminate the black line. I've only tested a few small pieces but it seems to work well. The images on the brilliant carving site of the piece with gold and silver appeared to be crisp without th...
