It was a little too quiet

You really mean mental health day . I got there at 8:30pm and I got to tell you Machine is pretty creepy when it's all rolled up for the night. And there was that creaking and that black dark you got out there. It'll test a man. Yikes Blake, I found it in the gloom and everything. Next time I'll sto...

Looking for trouble?

Not that 58th round draft choices should ever think they were going to get into the hall, but at least now I know I'm doomed. I'll still be an SC geek till judgement day either way, but where do the cards come from? My sub has only lapsed for one issue in ten years. Is that a transgression? Do they ...

How do you get even one? They sound indubatably cool but I have never seen one. On that score what do people do that are trying to fill in their SignCraft collection in general? I've bought all the possible back issues and I'm still shy a dozen that were sold out in the back issue section. Maybe I m...

Zoo pic & tape

I have a small amount of analog tape I collected at the Zoo, also a decent picture. I can transcribe the tape into text and or convert it to a format you could use. It's on mini-casette right now. There are a few touching quotes and a funny personal anecdote from him on there.

Tinting white

Or tinting anything for that matter. Denco is saying the tinting One-Shots black and white are not scheduled for reorder at all. I was thinking I should be using them from now on. Are they becoming discontinued? How useful are they generally and can you still get them somewhere?

Joe Barry & LIP

I'm still very motivated to document and interview Letterheads. Last year I got about 12 hours of tape concerning Letterhead memories and oral histories of sign personalities .This is a part of my self-styled Letterhead Interview Project (LIP)which I plan to work on into the foreseeable future for t...

I'll order some of that new stripper right away.
Thanks a lot.
Blake and Whitey really had me terrorized over the earlier version. I know it takes alot
to rattle those guys. Now I'm going to curl up with the AngelGilding catalog and get some rest

Silver strip not stripping

I waited a couple months to try to strip off some liquid silver, and I used some stripper that I finally tried to use that has been sitting since Micro. It didn't take much off. Did the Silver set up extra tough, or does the stripper get old? I guess Letterhead panels and 3 kids don't mix too well. ...

a long time ago I needed to repaint a logo that was directly over a large tree shrub. The only way I could get to the position was to have the ladder at a very sharp angle. I was lettering along with orange One-Shot and I had just put down my brush on the can, when I heard the noise, a sliding noise...

Deadman double-matte gild technique

I'd like to think my gilding is finally improving thanks to Ron Pecell and others who were so patient with me at the Deadman meet. I've also had lots of help in the past from Rick Glawson, Dave Guthrie and Kent Smith. I have been stuck on the idea of incorporating vinyl into the jobs mainly to keep ...

Can some one please advise
I need to repaint a black background that has old deep cracks coming through the cement. Should it be elastomeric then flat latex, or Chromatic matte black? You do want it to be a matte background behind the gold right? Jay Cooks primer first? Any tips would help.

repairing an old water gild

I just searched this topic and I'll tell you what. It was like being beamed up by a gold plated spaceship. The knowledge is overwhelming, but I didn't quite find the answer to my question. What is the best way to patch an old goldleafed window? Replacing whole letters would never match the previous,...

Ray is right. Mike's first article was issue 7 in 1981, right after his profile in issue 6. The article was something about how to carve a moose. Ray however did appear first in issue 2 with an article called "Quality" Now how about that? The last paraqraph of "Good design every time&...

Mike, Was Good design every time your first SignCraft article(Issue 31)? If so you're coming around to 20 years which is basically incredible. Thanks. Here's a retrospective question. Are digital prints really signs? Or what do you think about digital prints on the cover of SC? They must be signs. L...

White gold & resin gel sure sounds good to me. Hey, that could be a song! OK, I have a a chance to do a real letterhead sign but I could be going out on a limb, from which in the past I may have been called back by _ Finegold. I want to do a second surface glass silver gild, with resin-gel, neit...

Decorative bolt caps?

Happy New Year everybody!
What do you people do to cover an exposed hex nut and bolt end? I'm hoping for something that would perhaps glue or snap over the nut as opposed to threading on to the bolt end. Is there a supplier for this sort of thing. Thanks

Paint mask choices

I hope paint masking is respected around here because I use a lot of it to create less vinyl work. Does anyone have a handle on which types work for which work? I've been using Avery white which is a little too tacky for windows but seems fine on panels. I have ruined some white aluminum panels when...

3 Questions on Gilding plastic letters

I'm doing an old style sign which is rare around here. So rare that no one cares that the letters are going to be plastic. Anyway, Daddy Finegold suggested once that I paint them first with flat metal primer or something. Last time I didn't have any and I used a tinted Z-prime on cast plastic. I gue...

The latex in question

I was attempting to use "the clients paint". It was low-sheen maroon. Inside I put on an almost perfect coat with a dense white roller (which by the way are impeccable for oil coats). I thought it would work well because dead flat white latex seems to go on super with these rollers. I inst...
