Doug, I know where you're coming from. I did it the way you described for years myself, thats the way it was done. Although I do prefer using a brush I do have a plotter and it has made certain things easier. I hear my program is quite outdated though. I think Kent has the right idea - find someone ...

Doug, Are you trying to create half tones or just black & white film positives? I'm assuming you using this for a screen. For just black and white film positives you can buy clear acetate, or anything clear for that matter, cut out your file you've created on your plotter out of black vinyl. The...

Roderick, I did not realize the letters where that small and for small letters I would deffinately trust vhb, ecpecially with smooth surfaces. VHB is very good stuff on smooth surfaces, they even use it to put jet air planes together. I used to do very many gemini letters installs of 12" or lar...

I myself would not trust d/s tape only for installing any dimensional letters. I usually use vhb, the very thin stuff and apply just 2 or 3 small peices where it won't be visible. The d/s tape is for holding the letters in place untill and adhesive dries. I've allways used industrial strenght liquid...

Doug, I just took a look at the Pier Ale peice, and I'm thinking that acid etching seems to work out better in the less prominent areas. So I'll use the acid etching in another part of the design and stick with my chipped letters. Rick did a nice brown mottled background on that too I noticed. Hmmm....

Thanks Danny and Mike,

I guess I'll try out some letter centers as I'm working on a project that I was going to chip. I'll do a test of the different grades to see what is going to most suit my needs. I'll check out that list of suppliers as well.

Thanks again, Jerry

Acid Etching

I'm going to try my hand at some acid etching here and I have some questions. 1. Where can I obtain mica flakes for acid etching and is there any particular grade I should be looking for. 2. In what part of a design is acid etching most appropriate, the boarders, letters or other parts of the design...

Well thanks Dave. I sure could use some more knowledge as things get a little boring doing the basics. My areas of interest are chemical deposition of various metals, glass grinding and polishing, acid etching, glazes and mica powders. I better start figuring how to make it out there now!

Meet & greet piece

I attended a get together here in Washington state recently and made this there. No one there had ever seen any gilding before. No screens or stencils, or smith tip! One fellow that I let lay some leaf really got hooked. Anyway, it was fun. Sorry about the pics, trying to get it figured out. http://...

Thanks Raymond, I figured as much. I've got an expensive digital / video camera. Don't know if they sell a polarizing lens for it. I'll check it out. Got rid of an older Nikon thinking digital was all I would ever need. Doug, my ideas haven't been too far off your "cutting a hole" idea! Re...

I've not had very good results with taking a photo of glass peices. I noticed most of the photos posted here look very good. What are your methods.

Looking real nice. How much time do you have into this so far? I sometimes put more time into a layout than the actual job for personal satistaction reasons, not really getting compensated for the extra time. These drafts and your painted versions will be keepsakes I'm sure. Again, very nice work To...

Looks like fun Dave, especialy when you get paid to do it. Could you please explain the "dragin's blood", what type of paint is it and how was it applied. I see why it's called dragon's blood and I really like the way it looks.

thanks, Jerry

I agree Erik that some of the pieces they want restored I would leave alone, and I told them so. Then there are the ones that have the lettering worn off in places. They said that they are not concerned with devaluating anything by restoration, and have made up thier mind this is what they want to d...

I met with a couple who need over 300 peices restored. They range from lettering on wood peices, gilded glass, water slides and other things. I've had some of the peices they gave under the magnifying glass to try and determine if they are gilded or painted. It's very hard to tell. Also, they want th...
