Re: Smalts
No, but I don't see why you can't. What is the thickness? If there was any flex, I'd add a backer to prevent flex. Abrade the surface and paint the background the color of the smalts you'll use, or using expoxy as the binder add oil based paint the same color as the smalts into your epoxy, spread ov...

Re: Gilding a kitchen glass splash back
Brian, this page has back splashes. Look through his site, it's very extensive, and looks updated: http://www.goldreverre.com/splashbacks.php I would think the thickness you propose would be fine, but going directly behind a cooktop, I'd space the glass off the wall slighty, allowing for air circula...

Re: Price increase after 7 years???
HI Joe, I would'nt base my price on an increase from years ago, unless it's for the same customer, in which case, they would most likely question a drastic price increase. You've got two things going for you: you're hand carving a good product, and say there's no competition. There are very few prod...

Re: Old style copper framing...
Hi Erik, Dave's right, Rick made the frame. To my knowledge, he didn't make too many as they take time an a lot of care. It's a dangerous operation to split the tubbing unless you're set up right, and take a lot of care. While there are various size copper tubes, I think one size was used, as I've m...

3M VHB tape. Call a adhesive supplier or 3M direct as VHB comes in a various forms. For a start, try R S Hughes company in Oakland, CA, a 3M supplier. In the VHB line is a tape that's made specifically for the auto body business, that adheres aluminum panels to steel frames. If you're after other ma...

Dang, Doug, that's some slick work, keep the pictures coming! The only words you post is concern about the look of the shop. Your work requires no words to extoll it's worth, the pictures say it all! I'd like to know one thing: If your shop is 100 years behind the times, what are the nail guns doing...

Re: Commonwealth Varnish
Hi Rod, the rights to Commonwealth were sold by the heirs of Esoteric Sign Supply to an individual that didn't want to see the name vanish. The company formulating the varnish required a $ 5000 minimum order about 10 years ago. The last I heard about Commonwealth was about a year ago when the rights...

Vance, the product is Spray Max 1k , I have a can in front of me, it's use is limited only by the amount left in the can. Spray Max 2K is pre catalyzed. Vance,
do not use smiths cream, it will fail within a year or two, depending on your area and exposure.
Mark Oatis had an article in SOT years ago about this very issue, as did David McDonald in SB.

Re: sealing copper...?
No need for sandpaper, no matter how fine the paper or steel wool, unless it's part of the finish. Use any type abrasive and it will grain the metal. At that point you'll have to match the entire part, and for some pieces it's not possible. The only thing I use before coating with the clear is a wax...

Re: sealing copper...?
Hi Vance, I'd suggest Spray Max 1K. A good auto body supply should carry it, or an equivalent. Spray Max is an automotive grade, clear acrylic lacquer that produces an excellent gloss. I use it to clear copper leaf and brass plaques for customers that want to retain the bight polished look of brass ...

Re: Copper Leaf?
Hi Raymond, whatever size you use it needs to be on the tacky side, don't wait for the size to set up as you would with gold. I've found over the last two years that 1 shot gold size doesn't perform as it once did, and switched to luna 3 and 12 hour. For copper I'd use Wunda size, contrary to the fa...

Hi Erik, The scalloper most are familar with is the one Rick had made, and was pictured in many old sign catalagues from the 1900's. Other than that design, I've only seen 3 others that were worth considering. Those are pictured below. The first is similar to the original tool, the second appears to...

Depending on the detail of the art, have you considered a paint mask? With instructions under the current topic of paint masks, that would be my first choice. Apply the mask, roll size on w/ a foam roller and note the time. Make a seperate mask with several 2" squares and apply to a similar woo...

Both directions. If I look directly at the figure it's clockwise only, look to the bottom or top of the screen and back to mid torso it changes directions every time. The effect seems similar to rendering incised letters in PS. Depending on the angle you view it from, an incised letter appears to be...

Re: Question about clears over acrylics?
Well, I'd have to disagree on the aquathane. I have a quart the my shelf, tried it and it didn't hold up well in northern California where the weather is mild year round. It may work in some areas, the best way is to do a test. But in Florida and California. A friend in Florida made 20 - 4' x 20' HD...

Re: Pricing glass gilding jobs
Yes, and no. 1. Don't provide on the spot quotes. 2. Don't give a price on the spot unless you've done enough glass work over the years to know from experience what a similar job would cost; based on your question, it's assumed you don't. 3. Time and materials: do the quote back at the shop, just as...
