Re: Practice Materials
Kayla with the introduction of coroplast stake signs the old steel or aluminum panel signs have faded from use, kinda like milk bottles. Any smooth paint-able surface will work. Old glass windows can be used for practice and can be clean off rather easily. If you have a glass shop close to you stop ...

Re: Photographing glass signs and mirrors
Tyler, The image you are speaking of is a reflection of the Virgin Mary and I have now opened my studio up to pilgrims from around the world that come to see her. Finally I'll be able to quit the sign business and retire. Well I don't really see the Holy Mother. Maybe it's Painting Saint Glawson pe...

That looks fantastic.
Question... I was looking at the R.R.L sign.... do I see a ghostly face with piercing eyes.
Here I highlighted the area. It's in both versions of this photo the one you took and the pro's.

The outside spark line scrolling was that sandblast as it looks like it had some depth from the back side. Also when you remove the paint and silver what products are you using? I tried some g...

Re: Is this gold or what?
Size wise I'd say composition leaf. I have some old Comp leaf from the 50's still looks good. You can give it the flame test. Take a snip and hold it with tweezers or some tool. hold to a flame fake leaf will wither up... real gold will not.
Quickest way I know.

Re: Problems with glue chip
Andrey I'm no expert in glue chipping. Thou it appears as if you flood coated the glass instead of trying to color the glue inside the lines. My understanding is any bridging should be scored along the edges of the feature to try and avoid pulling and popping after the glue has set up but still rubb...

Re: Making my own gilder's cushion.
Dale
A gilder's cushion is one tool use when less then a full sheet of gold is needed. You'd transfer the leaf to the GC and then use the gilders knife to part it off. If you have a look at the Mayer video thread from Dave Smith, he at few points uses a cushion. Well worth the time to watch.

The changes you've made to the seven make it look less like a 7. What about removing the spur. Something like this.
To me it has more balance... and retains the 7 look.

Re: Back Up Black from Gilder´s question
Maius I'm not sure... personally I've always used turps to thin lettering enamels so that's what I used with the back-up. You could email Ron and ask him about the use of 1shot reducer.

Re: Which comes first the mirror or the sign?
I've done some screen printing... but never with paint. I think fresh paint is to thin and wants to flow and level out... whereas screen ink is thick and stays where it's laid allowing for the fine details to be retained. I'd try cleaning the screen place the cut graphics on the bottom of the screen...

I lucked into a lot of NOS leaf a while back it had red... blue... black and green. The patterned leafs with stars and swirls just does nothing for me. You can give this a try... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Variegated-GOLD-Leaf-14-x14cm-100-Sheets-Colour-Red-/230912465529?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trk...
