Re: Site Question
Bill, there are a couple ways to enlarge an image you see on screen. You can double click on the image, and sometimes it will open the image in an image viewer to a larger size. On a Mac or PC you can select the image and hit command + to enlarge, command - to reduce. Another option would be to drag...

Hi Cheryl, have you considered Benjamin Moore Aura paints?
Other forum members use the Aura line for their murals. Hopefully they will chime in, along with other favorites.
For my use, I've found BM Aura covers very well. I would never varnish a sign, that will be the first to fail.

Romain, I'd stay away from one shot and use latex paint. As far as ideas of how to, check out Rick Janzen's site, there's a tutorial on several of his aged signs. http://www.streamlinestudiosinc.ca/index.html He used to have a tutorial on his aged signs, which I can't find at this moment. If I find ...

Re: glass etching
Hi Bruce, back before the dot com bubble, we made 30 - 40, 10" x 10" plaques a month for a software company steadily for about 5 years, and used nothing but calendared vinyl. There was no depth carving, just a good frost w/ 180 grit silicon carbide. Many of the images were straight forward...

After seeing how you prepped the glass, it's surprising there was any disposition. I've used Sarah's kits in every flavor - gold, copper, silver, lead nitrate (galena), and following the directions supplied will produce good results. Suggestions regarding building a dam on the glass, or using acid a...

Well, since this surfaced again, here's my 2 ¢ . This shouldn't have been posted in the first place, as it only gives the 'expert' unwarranted credit. It's also exactly what I told Dave during a recent conversation; so no, this is not a criticism of Dave, his work or his posting. It's really quite s...

Summerland Beach Cafe
In visiting our son in Carpinteria, CA, a few miles south of Santa Barbara, we occasionally stop in Summerland, at Summerland Beach Cafe for breakfast or lunch. We always enjoy the visit, looking out at the ocean, or checking out the walls. I have no idea who did the work, or how long it's been up, ...

No, but if you're adventurous, do some tests, and post the results. A note from the late Rick Glawson: "NOTE: Only one type of glue will work for this process. It is a low grade, dry, animal hide glue with an approximate 165 gram strength and designated as glass chipping glue. High strength hid...

Fess up Mr. White.
That's the same guy, in the same place in the back, year after year. He'd just go back there... and spread out 2-3 pieces of glass on the easel, keep to himself, and work like it was going out of style.
What happened to that guy? He's not quite anymore!

Hi Bob, Someone at one of the Conclaves had a similar problem. Rick Glawson, or one of the many other smart alecks at the meet said to re blast with BB's. It was interesting to see the shocked / bewildered look, before said smart aleck cracked up, giving himself away as not being serious. That would...

Eric, follow Mike's suggestion regarding Summa running to your plotter directly, I think the software that comes with their plotter cuts directly. Another suggestion would be to look at Magi Sign: http://www.magisign.com/US/3_prod/MagisignCS/1_intro.html I used to use FlexiSign to plot with, but dro...

Corafoam is a great product. The dust is more like sawdust, and not as abrasive (?) as other brands. Problem is Corafoam doesn't seem too excited to sell to the sign trade, at least from my observation. 2-3 years ago a local supplier handled a good stock of sizes, and never had a problem getting wha...

Hi Rod, I'm surprised the gator board didn't deteriorate sooner. I know they make a product with pvc faces, but didn't think the core would last that long. As for paint, I've seen jobs Tony's done over the years, and the paint has proven to be a very good product. Top Photo, the letters are 1 1/4&qu...

Depends on thickness, but letters that size: acrylic, pvc, hdu, wood in that order best to least.

Hi Ron, I was working in a program called ArtCam, and getting a file ready to run to the CNC. Roderick, I'm guessing here, I think Doug's reference to Rick's add as much water as you want, it'll just take longer to dry, was just a comment Rick made, not a rule Doug follows. Lee, also wondering if polishing with rouge fills the paint pores as well as polishing the painted surface.
The result would increase the surface tension, which would repel solution gilding in the painted areas. In this instance it would be benifical.
