Re: Black Velvet On Gold?
Bruce, "Interesting to see the time intervals between gilding..20 years, 26 years, 16 years" Yup, there was another factor at work here. When Roy Darby regilded @ 26 years, I think some of the gold was failing - I know he said that they washed it all and used Bondo on some surface pits and...

"...Smith tip gild on last picture.!." Whuff. I have a hard time doing that regular a lay on a surface job. Even with the Smith Tip (TM) I am amazed you can keep the glass wet long enough. Are you laying from the top down in narrow rows, or big areas, or what? My master Roy Darby talked ab...

Re: Black Velvet On Gold?
well, for "burnishing" gold - wiping it down to remove the excess, and then rubbing it gently to close overlaps and rub out wrinkles - a lady's powder puff seems to be wonderful. Surgical cotton was the old standard, but it is getting hard to find and seems to be no better than the powder ...

i think Mark is referring to an old fashioned method of disseminating information which used black ink impressed on a cheap paper for illustrating the value of the stock market. What you do (if you have a newspaper anymore) is take the stock market or advertising section (Wall Street Journal used to...

Re: The Aultman Taylor decal project
Roderick mentioned the Art Decal Company. They seem to be primarily decals for ceramics, which is still a going concern. They do have a few water slide decals, and will make some for you, but seem pretty hesitant about it. I wrote asking about decal paper, and they suggested Bell Decals in Florida. ...

Re: 1868 Aetna Insurance Reverse Painted Glass & Abalone Shell
Two bidders. One did a last minute snipe and ran up to $679.00, but that price was "declined", so I guess it was below the minimum set by the seller. I have to say that I think it is irritating to have a blind minimum, so you don't know what the seller is willing to do. It feels more like ...

By way of comparison, here are some photos of what Roger Excoffon (type designer of Mistral, Choc and Antique Olive) did for the 1968 Olympics. Carl Rohrs took the pictures at an exhibition of Excoffon's work in Paris last year (I think).

Re: Prismatic Copper Leaf on Glass
So, Dave, are you still talking about copper leaf? The multiple-mask idea sounds great - no need to cut little masks out of acetate and hold them in perfect register while you rub - but how often can you go over a leaf before it refuses to show the latest burnish? And if you could do it slowly, with...

so for "lead foil backed" work you apply the foil to the glass, cut out the centers with a knife and weed them, then sponge a resist on and expose to acid? What holds the foil to the glass? Can you re-use the foil? It sounds like a harder way to do what we do now with silkscreen; but then ...

Eric,
Very nice indeed. Is it for a real bakery (bakkerij) or are you making one up? Or am I reading it entirely wrong???
Why do you call it a "french panel"? I have seen some lovely pictures of tall gilded panels from Paris bakeries, but was that style not common elsewhere? Tell all...

On the Brush Plating video: Very good! I appreciated the way that only doing 1/2 of the spoon made it easier to see the final plating. Which was what, chrome? Re: Toronto Restroom Sign
That's a cool sign. Is it held on to the metal backing sheet by little flanges bent over the "plinked" edges? I have a mimeoed page of directions for making "lead foil" signs; I think from the 1930s. You would glue thin lead foil on the back of the glass, then cut the letters and...

Yup, I too have been rolling in the Shorpy archives. There are some wonderful signs here and there, and in very hi-rez. That is a pretty good shot, Rod. I think that like Dave Smith's video, it will make sense to people who are not in the trade. And that is not easy to pull off - we get so wrapped up in all the lovely materials and processes that we often can't explain it easily. I think of it as as the "modern&...

Well, what if you wanted to hang something above a pedestrian area? I'd much rather have an acrylic piece hovering over me than a piece of glass... The time I wanted to use acrylic (job didn't come through) was for a "stained glass" projecting sign over a sidewalk. The nicest thing I have ...

Thank you, Pat. I will forward the info to a guy in our shop who uses the cream in his restoration pieces (beer ads, mostly). I'm impressed by using washes, letting the background show through and letting runs & drips add texture. And good lettering to boot. Nice work on the textured stucco. I remember a small gold leaf job on textured stucco in Carmel, CA. It was (I think) a ribbon and a putti on the outside wall of t...
