Re: Roman Alphabet Practice

You might want to try tracing an alphabet that is a tad bigger. It's OK to use a straight edge and a compass when constructing your letters. Also, just outline the letters, don't fill them in, and use a pencil, that way you can erase any misguided lines. Get your mind to remember letter forms and th...

It could be weak size, try using some more gelatin. It looks like you did not let the size dry. It also looks like you did not burnish the gold with cotton after the size dried. I see that you painted over the wrinkled leaf. You may have been to aggressive with your cleaning by using too much water,...

Does anyone remember Houlihan's Old Place Restaurants? These Glass signs remind me of that restaurant back in the 80's and 90's. The place was packed with them, mostly from across the pond. All sorts of exceptional pieces, wood, metal, glass, gilded, carved, and even framed b&w photographs of ex...

Yes, you could keep whatever version of Adobe CS you have now, never upgrade, and still make great signs from now until the cows come home. This is after all the hand lettering forum isn't it.? So break out that brush, mix up some paint, and get to it. That will surely calm down one's "going cl...

Grey Quill in water based paint...now there's your problem.

Quills are for oil based paint.

Sables are for water based paint.

And don't forget your speedball book for learning the correct strokes.

I seem to remember this site having some lettering how-to's.

Sometimes a lefty will struggle with painting letters. We are after all, living in a "righty" world. You must learn your strokes before you can make letters. Practice your strokes...a good speedball book will help you out in that regard. And so will the lessons on this site. Once you have ...
