Re: Chocolate Shop in Deventer Netherlands
Hi Danny, Thank you for the tips. You were correct, I shot a lot of these photos on the fly, as well as riding on a bike. That is why I positioned that reflection between Ringers and Chocolate. There was no snow and I looked closely to determine what that white reflection was, but I can't make it ou...

Re: Chocolate Shop in Deventer Netherlands
Here are some photos of that sign and one other in the same matte center/bright outline style. Note how the chocolate sign which is angled down, has less reflections on it than the right angle sign on the other building. The chocolate sign has a black painted background, the other is a dark green co...

Re: Chocolate Shop in Deventer Netherlands
Yes, we both took photos of the sign and in looking at my photos, I actually took mine at a closer range which shows the gold details as matte with bright outlines as you said.
I truly had a great time over there! So much to see!

Re: Chocolate Shop in Deventer Netherlands
Could it be that they angle the signs downward because the shop itself is raised up off of street level due to water levels? Maybe also by angling them downward, there is less bright "sky" reflected on the front glass surface which outshines the gold letters. PS: there were also "Ring...

He was a very genuine person to be sure. He always made it a point to come over and greet me at the conclaves, even before I could make the rounds.
What a shame to hear this sad news.
His family can have some comfort in the fact that we all so appreciated him.

I use 3M weather strip adhesive . Find it in auto part stores in a tube. Comes in yellow or black. Sets instantly and permanently IF you apply it to both pieces, pull them apart momentarily and blow on it quickly until it "strings" and then assemble the brush. NO SOLVENT will break it down...

That set up looks more like it was used for glassware or engraving star bursts on small bevels. Probably also why there are so few wheels.

Bruce, That is a nice sample, able to change it's look with the direction of the light. It appears to have real depth as well.
Your example is well accounted and well photographed.

Absolutely fanciful! These are the closest to some other panels I saw in an old warehouse in L.A. (1981) The panels I saw there had also added several colors that had been fired over the acid frosted areas. I have never seen any other panels done in this manner, that is, with colored frosts. While i...

Re: Glue Chip Cabinet
If you don't have the extra scratch to buy a dehumidifier, you can use an old air conditioner. An air conditioner's condensation coils pass more cubic air over them than a humidifier and are even colder. The important thing in both appliances is to capture the water run off from the coil and collect...

Woe is me! What happened to the good ol'days when you could just sit around and watch the glue chip. Are we in THAT big a hurry. UV chipping glue appears to create an odd looking chip as compared to that made by using hide glue. The collagen in natural hide glue has that special "biologic memor...

Re: using mica powders on glass
I had a great experience trying mica powders on glass. I used gold size, then sparingly applied the mica colors with my brush and also the foam rubber applicators packaged with the powders (Ron, Letterhead Supplies). Then I again used gold size over the mica, then applied my gold leaf. It would not ...

I think you answered your own question.
The bronze powder has always been available, but there was something"blowin' in the wind" in the 60's that gave it that "purple haze".

It is pretty blurry on YouTube and difficult to see any detail like possible glue chipping or make out the style of the embellishments. The frame doesn't look correct. But the letter style and sign size look appropriate to signs of that period. It could be an original, or someone with the skills to ...

Robert, I magnified the signature up as far as I could and although I can't read the signature clearly, I thought the bulk and spacing of the words fit the R&E signature. However the photo states 1906, so I wonder if Western SB was a competing sign company or had R&E been acquired by Western...

I jump onto shorpy to clear my head of the present and get lost in the past. Mostly viewing old store fronts, street scenes, and vehicles. Here's my spin on X-ACTO 's. Some of my handles date back to my early slot car years. Back in 1980 I bought a bulk pack of 100 No. X616 "chisel shape" blades. I only use that style of blade, and cut in a style that holds the knife handle straight up and down, not at the angle of an ink pen...

I viewed these films only one time because I have no time. The guns appear to be DI water, tin gun, silvering gun, tap water (may be filtered) and a water based acrylic clear coat that appears to take fast to the silver, so fast that it appears that he immediately removes the excess with a final tap...
