http://www.baronian.com/Photos/FineGold_3.jpg Vance, Jasco paint and epoxy stripper should strip the mirror backing. I've had good success even with epoxy, but for making an antique mirror, I would strip it completely - silver and all, then resilver. If you want the glass to remain clear, don't use...

Doug, go to the top of the screen and hit the search tab on the right. Type or paste in: gilding AND windows AND winter. Water gilding is durable, has been around for a long time, can be seen across the US, Canada, and the UK in every climate imaginable. Find a window in your shop or house and do a ...

Got my camera this morning, and have done very little work since then. The difference between the D70 and 70s are minor. Larger LCD, slightly faster startup, newer firmware, improved battery, but to repeat, minor improvements. Search around and you can find the D70 from reliable photo shops w/ rebat...

The tin will tarnish the back of the silver but does not show through the front. I don't know what will happen over the long term, and obviously, if it's rinsed well will probably eliminate further deterioration. If you angle gild, followed by silver, remove the mask to re tin the exposed glass, rem...

I decided to get the Nikon D70 after talking to Mike, viewing the pictures he's taken, and reviewing many of the comments on the site Ron listed. Here are several galleries that also helped in my decision in going with the D70: http://www.jimtardio.com/france/normandy/normandy.html http://www.jimtar...

As with all chemicals they are best kept in a dark, cool dry place. Silver will degrade faster than any other chemical when exposed to light. I believe Sarah's kits, unmixed have a useable shelf life of 1 year, but stored improperly would drastically shorten that life. Also, only mix up what your go...

Russ, I would guess it's either contamination or the tin solution is too strong. With too much tin, or if the tin hasn't been washed off throughly, the silver will go off where the highest concentrations of tin is on the glass very fast which would could cause a whitish / gray cloudiness. Short of s...

I don't see any info regarding the contents Doug, but it's listed purpose is to eliminate fish eye where silicone may be present. It also says it improves flow-out and increases gloss. When I've experienced problems it has helped. John should jump in here as he'd be able to add to the topic. I experi...

Well I'm in the market for a new one too. I've had several nikon digitals, the most recent an older 950. It works very well, but looking for something better for low light. The Nikon D70 seems to be a good choice. I'm also looking at the D2H. I haven't heard about stabilization in the camera, that m...

The gold has to be silvered in angel gilding. The gold is fragile enough to be wiped off easily. The order for angel gilding is gilding, silvering and backing up by hand or by screen printing. After the back up has dried, silver strip is sprayed onto the glass and carefully wiped down with cotton, l...

Felix, Tinning is a chemical solution applied to the glass to accept chemical disposition, be it silver, gold, lead nitrate or copper. The metal disposition actually binds to the tin, not the glass. Think of it as a chemical double sided tape, it binds in two directions, to the glass and to the meta...

The added hardener would make the back up paint more durable, and in turn hold up better cleaning the gold. John Studden's been adding 1 shot hardener to the back up prior to screening the back up for the bright lines at the last Memorial Conclave, and the paint held up better than I'd ever seen at ...

Milk Wagon, San Francisco, 1800's
Here's a scan of a photo from a glass negative. I have no information on it other than the wagon was used to deliver milk in San Francisco.

I was mainly responding to Harry's problem with layout on a material that would be difficult to clean up afterward. I was also curious wether anyone else had found a good use for laser levels. Laser Level?
Looking over Harry's post ' Putting lines on Foamcore' brought over from the old board, has anyone considered a laser level? Not long ago the entry level was around $ 500, now I see them advertised in the 20 - 30 dollar range. I bought one years ago, and many times have eliminated a chalk line, espe...

As I was told, Bulldog is a paint promoter. I think it was designed mainly for plastic / rubber car bumpers which come untreated and unprimed. The bumper is cleaned then sprayed with bulldog, followed by final paint. So the short of it - mask your board and use bulldog only on the areas you'll be pa...

Raymond, Do a test first, but this should work for you. Clean the board well, with a final cleaning with 1:1 denatured alcohol and water, then mask as usual . I don't think the boards are coated with silicon, otherwise the markers wouldn't work on the board. If that is of concern though, use an auto...
