Re: Memorial Conclave 28
Does anybody have anything different to say other than, "I haven't finished my project...and I don't know what Whitfield's talking about"? Well, I haven't finished my project but I did use the film positives to burn new screens. Since then I have gilded new glass, repaired the messed up s...

Re: The Future of Hand Painted lettering with Gold Leaf
John, very nice description and, of course, the work is stellar. Good to hear from you and to see some of the elegance you guys produce. You always amaze me with your skill and knowledge. As for the future of hand painted lettering with Gold Leaf, I know from personal experience that many people don...

Re: Which comes first the mirror or the sign?
What a great idea to cut your mask out of vinyl to make a screen. I will certainly try it. But, one question: why not just put emulsion on the screen, apply your mask and then burn the screen?
I'm gonna talk to you guys about mirroring. I need to know this.

Re: Price of Gold Leaf
I just received a pack of 23K from W&B, made in the US, great quality and $725.00. They are the last of the domestic gold beaters, family operated, always friendly and my order arrives in just a few days. I agree with Kent. I've used W&B for years and as he says, they are the last domestic ...

Re: Fast Gold Size
A couple of years ago I was experimenting with transparent inks and I came across a product used to prevent skinning of the ink between uses. The ink was solvent based and when I bought a selection of the the gloss enamel inks I also bought some of the anti-skinning agent. The anti-skinning agent (G...

Re: Price of Gold Leaf
......The quality of Gold Leaf is very suspect these days, along with where a lot of it is claimed to be manufactured, I have used a lot of "repackaged " far eastern type Gold that just does not lay or burnish well....There always seems to be cut lines that cannot be burnished out....ruin...

Re: Fast Gold Size
I agree with Roderick and Larry. Purcell's new fast size is very good. However, my can has started to get noticeably thick after about six months so when I use it I add a couple of drops of turpentine to thin it out and get it to flow easily. That works well and I can detect no harmful effect on the...

Wow Larry. Very nice. I like the detail in all of it but the border is really sweet. Excellent work as always.

Re: Dry erase makers on glass
I have a dry eraser/white board in my shop. So I used the pen to write something on (clear) glass. It erased pretty easily - equivalent to the white board. But two things: Without the white background of the board it was not all that easy to see. So depending upon the background and the decoration y...

Re: Original Dead Men
I like your piece a lot Blake. Sweet it is. Where's the Mock though? At least a RIP or somethin'. Anyway, I painted the image yesterday. I still need to put the shell on the text of "Full Tild". Took a pic in the sun and the colors washed out so I took one in the shop but the gold washes o...

Here is another option for you. I have used a couple of set ups for a foot switch but by far, the best I have ever found is the Richway airpinch valve. It works great, is an American company run by very knowlegable, friendly, helpful people. If you call them, it is very likely you will end up talkin...

Great videos Dave and lovely family. I noticed in the earlier videos that you had cut the spline from the book of gold and were picking up the tissues with something. I've never seen that before, what kind of tool is that? In the last video it looked as though you had opened the book on the table an...

Thanks Sarah and James for your thoughts. I have made a few pieces with both brass and copper came. I didn't like it because, unlike lead, it does not bend very well. The result is you are pretty limited to geometric designs or large gradual curves. I have also repaired several old pieces which had ...

Gilding Lead Came
This may be obscure and since it is my first of many questions, please forgive the naivite (sp?). I am a stained glass artist and something I have read about but never seen is gilded lead came. I would like to give this a try on a small piece but a couple of immediate questions come to mind: 1. Sinc...

Thanks for the kind words Dennis. I am trying to lurk here and glean as much as I can before exposing my ignorance but couldn't resist adding the note about the glass cleaning soap Ron Purcell is brewing. Indeed I was totally in awe of the gilding work I saw in Boise. I dream about it now. I finishe...
