Well, the Hamilton Bank Note piece ventured it's way down to the 2006 Memorial Conclave for closer inspection. I trust the piece and this step-by-step has been an inspiration. Thanks John for having us all, great time indeed!

Thanks for following along.

Thanks Mike!
These threads are intersting. I especially like this one. I was in the process of drawing up a new original sign. I'll have to look at it with this criteria in mind. ...as soon as I figure out what it all means. (SWM)

Etching techniques

Hi Kelly- I've done some of this. Firstly, you can't get sandcarved glass to return to a polished state to get a mirror finish gild. It's more of a matte gild, but a bit brighter. Acid treatments to sand carved glass will smooth out the etched surface a bit, usually enough to do a chemical depositio...

Honest opinions...

Say, not too bad for a new kid! The Dos Equis looks clean and tight, nice colors. Watch for your letter centers getting too large. The center plus the brightline should be your character width. The "Special Lager" letters look a little over bold. The Letter "A" looks like it's al...

No, it wasnt a joke, I really wanted to know what it said. I just get confused between right and left... or is that left and right. Thanks for figuring it out for me.

I purchased one of these Coleman Heaters off ebay and have found it to work quite well. I've got a walk-in booth that's about 5' x 10' x 8'. I can get it up to almost 100 degrees. I haven't checked the humidity level, cause the glue always chips off. The nice thing about it is it's fairly cheap to r...

This piece is done on 1/4" thick extra-clear Starphire glass. The depth carving is about 1/8" or so deep. The use of accentuating the depth carving with a glaze as a shadow was a new technique to me. That's the way it appeared in the original lithograph, so I thought I'd try to replicate i...

I like Mike's idea of doing the complicated 4' x 5' sign. Heck, it might come out grand and you can skip all those test pieces. Hmmm...I do have a lot of test pieces around here though...wish they all had a label as to what they are....darn. (Date and label your test pieces as to what you did, that'...

I agree with Mike's comments. I have had success in both removing depositted gold, then silvering the whole, and damming for seperated, one step, solution gilding. I would have to say both techniques are fairly advanced and require full expertise and knowledge in solution gilding. For matte work whe...

Powdered dyes for tinting shellac...

I found this company which sells a variety of powdered dyes, one of which can be used to dye shellac. They can be found at:

Mike, perhaps you can add them to the hard to find supplies list.
