Here's a photo from Nero Glass works in London England. They were using talo (sp?) for the dams around the glass as scene in the attached photo. Was there with Dave Smith a few years ago.

Re: The Future of Hand Painted lettering with Gold Leaf

I guess this ends the discussion of "How to live with Vinyl/ Computers" in our day and age. Although McMahon has more grey hair than I remember the work at Classic is just that....classic and outstanding.....and one of the perfect confluences of old world and new world.

Chuck....checked out the tutorial and enjoyed. Although over the past year or so I've begun a familiarity with illustrator it's so great to watch someone at work who actually knows what he/she is doing!

Re: Current clients looking for Gold-leaf signs

Hi Jack. There's a pile of old leafed projects in almost every city in North America. You just need to look a little deeper. Even in the town I'm in (Ottawa Canada) there are remnants of hundreds of gilded transoms.....some are amazing shows of talent. I should have spent more time with my camera ar...

Re: Backing up Silver Gild

Just a quick addition. Use a back-up like Decor for this....also available at Letterheads Supply. One shot is really not the best choice for use on glass period. Silver is a brighter silver in appearance and used as you describe the earlier mentioned concerns should not be a problem....after all whi...

Mike....thanx for that I'd also concidered the idea that "Trying to make and sell the custom books through Blurb isn't going to make any money. While they are very reasonable in cost for a custom product, they were way too expensive to have made and try to sell to the general public that are us...

Goldie. I keep a couple of weather channels on my desktop as well. Teton village is one of them as whenever I see it getting harsh for you I know it's only a few days from here. Last week while you were settling into the deep freeze we were getting a warmshot. That sure is ending now as you can't se...

Re: eBooks for your portfolio?

Mike....now that there's been a little time in between this post and your book, how has it gone? Has the marketing link worked? Have you sold many copies etc etc. As you know I have hundreds and maybe thousands of Pub Photos I've collected over the years and it's now time to do something with them. ...

from the past

When I first started in the sign business....(actually well before) my deepest desire was to do TV sho-cards in the town I lived in at the time, Peterborough Ontario. I recall that during commercials there was usually just a voice over and the camera focused on the still of a sho-card. These would h...

Well!! That's the first I've heard of that other than I knew it was done on site in the past. A little crazier might be the acid etching also done on site. I dug out a copy of SOT from Sept. 1958 that I stumbled on some years ago and in the questions and answer section there was one regarding "...

Mine is a guess only at early part of last century. Just a guess because of the Art Nouveau-ish border. We'll have to hope someone knows something more. Pretty great stuff eh?

Re: Signage at the Cock and Bull - Sutton

Hi Again....I have used that process many many times. Its the jagged edges you mention that bother me. You do get saw-toothing with direct emulsion over a course screen but at that time there's no possibility that they were doing that. Hand cut screens or a method of painting a resist on the screen ...

Re: Signage at the Cock and Bull - Sutton

Hi Jack. I've seen quite a few of these Fuller pieces over the years. Everytime I get to London I'll spend time in search of these. There are sooooo many Fuller, Smith and Turner's glass pieces about I can't imagine they weren't printed over gold and silver in some manner. I've sent this link off to...

Re: Signs From Sydney Australia

The French ones, typically seen in Paris boulangeries, seem to mostly be painted onto canvas and the canvas is stuck onto the glass...Erik has studied them first-hand...maybe he can chime in. Hi Bruce...a few years ago Smitty and I were visiting an antique dealer in London. His nick name was Malcom ...

colouring ideas

I have a project on the go right now and am looking for the "inspiration" ideas that others have for colouring a sign. Over the years I've seen some great work from folks on this forum like Mark Oatis, Dave Smith and Mike Jackson that use colours in unusual ways. Mixtures of things that on...

Hi Lorenzo....welcome aboard. Pouce bags are probably best if you use charcoal powder or regular talcum for your dark backgrounds. You really only need a "whisp" of it so go lightly right? A heavy deposit will cause problems when you start painting. If you only have one pattern to transfer...
