Roderick, nice to know where it went. The shaft on the floor is a drive shaft and is used for running multiple machines. When Rick installed it he either planned on setting up the other two or didn't want to cut it down. If it was ceiling mounted, you'll probably have to have a transition pulley for...

Polishing Glass: The wrong & right way
After completing a set of glass doors for a local brewery, I realized the masking had lifted in a section that was supposed to remain clear. Not having time to remake one piece to meet the opening, I opted to take it to a local shop that bevels glass where they could polish the slight frost out. Bef...

How was the Memorial Conclave? Great, thanks to John and Kathi Studden, and for the great design work by David Butler. There was the meet project, glass to go around, gold in the air (literally), inspiration from those sitting next to you as well as on the walls, entertainment, and a very cool surpr...

Bon Ami or whiting and ammonia diluted with water. If you have residual adhesive, try a adhesive remover first. Your scratches are probably coming from the razor blade. I was always told not to use a razor blade unless absolutely necessary, and then only with a new blade. Bon Ami in bar form has bee...

Take some of your mixed silver strip and start with a 1-20 ratio with water. and lightly spray or splatter the edges. If that doesn't work or work fast enough, lower the dilution rate. You want a dilution that attacks the silver slowly in a way you can control. When you get the effect you want, rins...

The strongest option would be to drill a through hole through the panel, countersink the face, insert a carriage bolt and affix to the board with a nut on the back, leaving a stud hanging out the back to fasten to the ship, fill the front countersunk hole - assuming it was painted. Otherwise ..... N...

Old magazines
Taking a break the other day, I grabbed an old magazine off the shelf that hasn't been touched for a long time - SignCraft, Sept/Oct 1996. Not one to reflect on the past year or guess at what the new year will bring, none the less, I found it interesting to see the articles within this issue to see ...

Jeff, have you looked here?: http://www.theletterheads.com/lhparts/gluechip.html This has been discussed before, and the link above has more info regarding glass chipping in one area than any other I'm aware of. Roderick, 3M probably has a product that will work for your needs. Try R.S Hughes, they should have a store in so cal. Short of that, try a wholesale fastener supplier, contractor supply or look in the yellow pages for adhesives (better yet use google). In addition to fasteners, they usually carry a...

Hi Bruce, Here is a picture of the nipper and a glass sampler with the edges chipped. The circular dots at the top were brass clips with a brass chain attached from the back to hang. The back was finished with flocking. The nipper can be hand held, but for smaller pieces, it was generally bench moun...

Raymond, as in Larry's post, from Mike's link, tempered glass can be glue chipped but the results are not as good as annealed glass. If you want to include glue chipping, do so after beveling prior to tempering. When checking with companies that temper glass, ask about their failure rate in the even...

Kelly, looks good. Will you be adding any color to the banner, or does it remain white? As it is, the banner seems too dominant. A texture or slight tint would tone it down some. What is the size of the finished piece, and how will the shield be executed? Some may cringe, but I would consider a high...
