Workshop with David A. Smith, December 2011

Post by Jeroen Koning »

Hi everybody,

Here are the pictures of the five day workshop I did last week with David Smith in Torquay, Devon in the UK.

The weeks before Dave started vectorizing the artwork of The Star Engraving Co. letterhead. It was screaming to get worked into a glass piece as Dave stated it. I could help him with putting some of the artwork in vector as well. That way I could get grip of the art and begin thinking about a color scheme.

So when I entered the workshop the Star Engraving Co piece was already put up a screen ready for printing.

After printing we started with embossing the star and the punti. I tried it out and found out it was very difficult to place the glass in the exact place where the embossing had to be done. Thanks Dave for cutting the star so spot on. It stands out and makes the piece shine bright…

All basic technics of signwriting and glass embossing were carefully explained and shown. Working along side of a real master of the craft was very inspiring!

So now the rest is up to me to master it myself…

Many, many thanks to Dave and his family for having me and I can say I made a new good friend!

Jeroen

Hi Jeroen. Glad to see you made it back in one piece. Very much enjoyed your company this last week. Jeroen is a master at design , he took to reverse glass like a duck to water. We got that colour scheme worked out just in time.. fun project and good company.

I talked him into a visit to Larry's Deadman one of these days, hopefully next summer...

Welldone Jeroen.

Well done. A 1:1 class with Dave must be fantastic as well as a lot of fun. I'm glad to see you giving those classes Dave, you are a Master of your Craft!

And ain't his shop a treat to visit as well? Great work dripping from every corner and certainly among the top half dozen craftsmen working today.

Looks great Jeroen. The colours really pop off this panel with that frame. We need to see it hanging on your wall next. Good luck with your other gilding projects.

Here's a short film of Dave signwriting some letter shadows in reverse at the December workshop. The letters are half inch in size, real ticky to paint.

This looks great in the kitchen area Jeroen. Your girlfriend must be happy, I remember you saying about matching up colours! Perfect match.
By the time I come to Amsterdam you and Erik should have the place covered with gilded glass. Nice job mate, glad you enjoyed the workshop.
