A couple books I ordered finally arrived yesterday - Mastering Layout by Mike Stevens, and The Art of Hand Lettering by Helm Wotzkow. I'm excited to dive in! The Art of Hand Lettering looks especially juicy.
Full-bodied and easy to drink.

I just ordered as many of the recommended books as were available and a big thanks to David Slade for those links. I look forward to getting them printed.

I just bought "Logo Font & Lettering Bible" by Leslie Cabarga and it sure sheds a lot of light on the very technical aspects of lettering and logo design. The reading is also quite delightful (I cannot think of a better word). I bought it at Books a Million, in Daytona Beach, FL for $26.99 with my discount. At least to me, it is well worth the money. Merry Thanksgiving to one and all.

This is not a sign book, really, but still it is an eye-opener. Wood type was usually used like other type - print black ink on white paper - but sometimes a printer would use color. And if one were an adventurous, meticulous printer, there were 'chromatic' types that printed over themselves (in register) to give multi-color results. This is a .pdf of the William Page chromatic catalog - about 35mb.

Just look at the wacky green "shading" - it's a perspective or something...

Wow, that is great Lee. Almost too much to take in on one sitting. Definitely some designs to draw upon.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this board here but there seems to be a ton of inspiring and impressive material here.

I recently launched a new website called Lettering Library where I'm going through my personal collection of old lettering, sign-painting, alphabet, monogram, and scroll books and posting them as downloadable PDF's at the rate of 4 books per month. I currently have Prang's Standard Alphabets, Real Pen Work - Self Instructor in Penmanship, Art Monograms and Lettering by J.M. Bergling, and Distinctive Lettering and Designs by A.J. Hewett available for purchase. Or you can subscribe and save a bit of money that way and get four books delivered via email to you every month. I hope you find this as a useful resource!

A guy called "Graphic Jules" on FB (maybe he's here ?) just uploaded "Sign Painting Course" by E.C Matthews on archive.org :

And i've Just received the last book of Louise Fili, "Grafica Della Strada: The Signs of Italy" released last month. It's a good source book, with a lot of glass signs, and quite cheap.

ISBN 0-8069-5434-5 AACR2
ISBN 0-8069-8984-X

It has a lot of illustrations, examples, hand carving, routing, carving machines, sandblasting, and source of supplies,

I learned from Sign Painting Techniques by Ralph Gregory from Shawano Wisconsin
and a manual I think it was called How to Paint Signs by Fredrick Ivar Louvret from Gainesville Texas.
Both are excellent and very down to earth in their language.
I posted small tributes to both these men on this page...

This is a nice book about a great letterer from about 1910 to 1950. Not sign painting, but posters and printed ads and some killer monogram sketches. And it is being remaindered, so it's cheap.

Someone tell me where to buy or download the book "Gold leaf tehcnigues" Kent H. Smith in format PDF? To order a printed version is not possible, as its shipment in Ukraine will be more expensive than the cost of the book itself.
