Herb Agnew's Shop Notes: Jan. 24, 2006

Post by Mike Jackson »

From Herb Agnew's Shop Notes (1951)
The layout, or grouping or your various elements such as headings, secondary copy, illustrations, and price has more to do with teh satisfactory appearance of your finished card or sign than any othr single thing.

Always feature the important words or group of words, and of course subordinate or make smaller the less important copy. To arrive at the most important word or words, talk the thing over to yourself...suppose you have a card to make, as we did just this afternoon, which reads, "Clearance Sale of Ladies Dresses." This card will be used in a window display. Now the comon error would be to stress the word "dresses." This is wrong because the sign is to used in a window filled with them and obviously anyone would know that they were dresses. The really important word is "Clearance!" Analyze the copy problems in the above manner.
