Here's an interesting one from the book:

Putty, INSTANT DRYING - It can be made from powdered whiting and shellac. Or you can use dry plaster, corn starch or almost any powdered substance to mix with the shellac. Make only a small quantity as you need it and apply with a putty knife, to fill holes in wood etc.

Linseed oil putty dries slow but this shellac mixture is ready to paint over in a minute or two.
