Shellac is an old standby for keeping pitch knots or red paint from 'bleeding through' on repaint jobs. It is good for stopping suction on stone, wood, cloth, etc. when you want to lay gold leaf. It is also good for going over Japan color on glass, if the color has a tendency to bleed whey you stipple on a background.
