Get it while ya can...

Looks like Dave Glawson is selling off "the last" Rawson & Evans piece from Rick's collection.

I'm not sure if it is in original condition, or if Rick restored it...

I received a window, from a friend at Guarantee Glass, assuring me it was a job.

It's for a church. Asked him what he wanted on it....wasn't quite sure.
I just told him to look around, and when he get's an idea, just let me know.
There was no reason to hurry.

So, he came back to me, said he'd like this picture of two angels...

Image

What he provided was about as big as a postage stamp, so I did a little research...
And guess what! It's "Christe in the Sepulchre, Guarded by Angels", an illustration by William Blake!

How 'bout that!

Well, I'll have a go!

I created a vector file of the art so I could computer cut the stencil, added some text at the top.

Image

Made one of my color coded road maps on how to execute it.

Image

Got it all masked off and ready to go...

Image

...Looks like I got myself into something bigger than I am...

...well, I'm 74" tall, and that window is 80" in diameter.... crikey!

Wish me luck, heh?

Thanks Vance.

The window was supplied to me already fabricated ready to install.
I usually prefer to just work on the glass by itself. I charge extra for masking
window framing, wood doors, door rails, etc. But in this case, it was best to
have it assembled. It would have been more work to jig up and hold the odd
shaped glass as it was to mask the metal frame.

The basic time breakdown on this job was:
Translate provided picture into vector file and cut the masks, 8 hours.
Apply the masks and mask the metal framing, 3 hours.
Create "road map" instructions on how to execute it and set up equipment, 1 hour.
Sandblast the entire image, 7 hours.
Remove residual masking and clean, 1 hour.
Total, 20 hours.

I was pleased with how it came out, and the artist is always the biggest critic, so I know the guy will like it.

....glad to come in this morning with it done!

Great job Larry! Sounds like you spent a good amount of time
sandblasting. Tell us if you will a little about your etching process
if you will, i.e. your pot and air set-up, sandblast mask you use and the
grit you use also. Do you vary the grit size sometimes?
I think the customer should be abundantly happy with this job.

Hi Mark....Well, this place is set up to do industrial sized production. I have
three 18' x 8' sandblast booths, using an air supplied breathing hood. One is
set up with 220 aluminum oxide for mimicking satin glass, one is set up
with 100 mesh silica sand, and the other is for blasting coarser textures.
I'm running a 375cfm diesel compressor and have an industrial dust collector.

I did this job all in the 100 mesh booth, but sometimes I will vary the grits
for special effects. The booth is set up with a 5 sack pot (holds 500 lbs of sand)
employing a 5/8" sandblast nozzle, usually running at 60 psi. For art glass
projects, I'll use a 1 sack pot and a 1/4" tip, (or smaller, if required) running
varying preasures. In this case, I used both. This project employed both
shading techniques and toned areas.

Pictorials, or graphics can be created via a toning process by weeding part
of a design, giving it a uniform light blasting, then weeding out another
section and repeating. It is possible to achieve 3 to 4 tones. The clear
glass appears darkest, 100% sandblasted, the lightest, and the varing
intensities in between can create the 3 to 4 different levels of "gray".

On this project, I selected 3 different gray tone areas, but prior to
sandblasting the tone, I shaded each section. First, I went ahead
and sandblasted the 100% sandblasted areas (the letters & the arm
and face). Then proceded to shade the sections of the area with the
lightest tone, that being the gown and inner wings. There were 7 mask
pulls on the gown and 6 mask pulls on the inner wings, each pull being
shaded individually using the small pot and small tip at about 25 psi.
After that, I toned the whole area with the larger pot and tip at
about 60 psi. Next I repeated the shading process for the medium
tone areas (hair & outer wing). The hair had 4 mask pulls and the
outer wing 12 pulls. It was then toned (which also lighten the 1st
pass tone area). Then I weeded the mask for the darkest tone (no shading
on these areas), which was the background hand and wing, fascial
lines, fingernails, and sleeve.
I then proceeded to mask over the two angels with clear sandblast
mask up to a border I had left around the figures. I then individually
sandblasted the sun rays with the large nozzle, letting them fade
out at the top of the glass. I then peeled off the remaining mask,
dusted it off, and it's ready to go!

I like to use Venture Tape 4 mil sandblast resist. It's tough,
cuts easily, and peels clean.

I think you are in the game like few others, not without having
paid your dues to get where you are. I sandblast my signs with an
80cfm compressor, when I saw your 375 I was taken aback.
Thanks for sharing your work efforts with us hope to see more.
