water gild supplies

Post by Jerry Berg »

My sign supplier in Portland, Oregon here has never heard of gelatin diamonds. I've been wanting to use them for some time now. My supplier said to find where to get them and he will start stocking them. Also, what are people cleaning glass with now days? I need a link or phone number for this also. Prep-sol maybe or whats best. Thanks much!

Jerry,

check out the green page Mikes set up for supplies and info:

gelatin sheets:

Check Wal Mart in the food section. The last link above is a pack of 20 sheets, similar to what Esoteric sold, and sells for 4.50 a pack. If your supplier is looking at stocking gelatin, have him check with a local food wholesaler.

Sarah King at anglegilding.com sells solution guilding supplies as well as glass cleaner. I wouldn't use prep sol at all, but rely on a ammonia and whitting slurry cut with a little water.

Use a commercial grade ammonia, not the type carried in grocery stores as it's a dilute form with additives that work as well.

Bon Ami is still a good cleaner used frequently. The bar form has been discontinued, but powered BonAmi in the mustard yellow can - not the metalic gold can - is the same as the bar, just in powdered form.

Just and FYI that Ron Purcell (Letterheads Supply) is brewing a batch of glass cleaner to fill the gap from the loss of the cake form of Bon Ami. I ordered some last week but I don't know when he will have it ready to ship.

Nice to see you over here

Hey, Rich, nice to see you over in this forum. For those of you who don't know Rich, he is one gifted craftsman when it comes to stained glass. He is branching out into the glass etching and gilding side of things. We had the pleasure of having him stay with us while he attended Noel and John's workshop last month. Needless to day, he left here awed and inspired to work with what he had learned in the workshop. Oh, and he's no slouch when it comes to being a musician, either. A man of many talents.

Take care.

Thanks for the kind words Dennis. I am trying to lurk here and glean as much as I can before exposing my ignorance but couldn't resist adding the note about the glass cleaning soap Ron Purcell is brewing.

Indeed I was totally in awe of the gilding work I saw in Boise. I dream about it now. I finished two of the three pieces from the class and gilded three of my kanji pieces. I am focused now on getting ready for a recording session in LA in two weeks. But that is not the subject of this thread so enough said.

Best wishes.
