I placed some video's recently of my new Smith Tip Design onto Youtube.
You can see my kids using them and demonstrating how they work.
In a few shots the hairs touch the glass due to them pressing the Tip to the glass and no experience. This video shows my 14 yr old daughter Hannah at her first ever attempt at laying goldleaf and just home from school. This was Millie my 5 year old and Lauren my 9 yr olds second go ever.
It gives people a good idea on how easier it is to lay Goldleaf now.

Dave,
Well done!
With these videos on your new "Smith Tip", it shows people how really easy it is to use. This beats an instruction sheet anytime! Besides, who READS instructions anyhow.

I also think Lauren is going to be a full time Sign Person when she gets older. You can tell she's be bitten by the "bug".

Great videos Dave and lovely family.

I noticed in the earlier videos that you had cut the spline from the book of gold and were picking up the tissues with something. I've never seen that before, what kind of tool is that? In the last video it looked as though you had opened the book on the table and were just turning the tissue pages over. I can see an advantage to that method in that the book is still in tact and the tissues can be folded back over to store the remainder of the book. Do you have a preference between these two methods?

Thanks Gary and Kelly. Lauren is very interested. She always comes in my studio after school wanting to know what I'm upto,she shows alot of interest.
Rich the idea behind the tip was to make it quick and easy to lift sheets of gold from the book. Having to keep turning paper and keeping the paper down was more hasle. If you cut the binding of the book off it makes it easy then by lifting the paper at the end in a rolling action or just by picking it up to expose the leaf for the tip.
The little gadget to pick up the paper is a pencil with some double sided tape attached that's all. When you place the tip on the gold its important to show a small strip of gold on the top edge so you get some idea on positioning the leaf. In the video my kids are at different angles with the tip they really need to be more upright to allow an even jump to the glass- saying that they seemed to have good success with it.
Like I said in my last post you will still need a standard tip for smaller work but this does change the gild quality to even flatness throughout the layer of gold being applied.
The method used is probably better inside working rather than on site where I would probably keep the binding intact.
Most of my work is done on the bench you see ,so the gold still is kept together after the book has been cut.

I never thought of that,it will be strange watching them in 10 years time.
Have you used your Tip yet? See what I can come up with for a designing tool ,now that would be a break through.

Dave,

Great job on the video presentations. The girls did a super job as models...they do seem to have the technique down quite well. You have revolutionized something that has been around for eons of time. I congratulate you on your success with the Smith Tip. While at Noel's shop, I eyeballed his ST but he seemed to be watching me out of the corner of his eye. He did let me hold it for about 20 seconds. I told John Yarnell to let Noel know about your videos. Noel can never remember his password to this forum...lol.

Hey! What about the Millie Smith does brilliant cutting video? Crikey Dave, with all those fully skilled gilders you got there, looks like you'll be able to take more vacations..... See Lige, he's no fool our gilding friend. Only way to handle it!

Kinda envy you guys that have your shops right there at home. Lucky skunks! I'll probably never get there. See, I'm already at the end of the line.

I do like that tip Dave, works darn good, truth be told!

Thanks Larry and Tony. Get your butts over here for a spot of tea and some Devon Cream Scones.
And when your full and ready to bring it all up we'll do some gilding. Dennis when Noel is on vacation you need to test his tip out and see how well it works for you.
I think in the future I will be sending some tips to Noels for some of his Gold workshops there.
