Origins of composition gold leaf

Post by margaret norman »

Hello

Can anyone throw some light on the origins of composition gold leaf (cgl)

I think it must be a product of the industrial era for several reasons.

Be glad to hear what you all think?

Thank you

Margaret, can't help with the origins, but include dutch metal in your search which is a common name for composition leaf.

Also search for Schwag Metal. Same thing with a different name.

I did a quick search, but not much turned up on it's origins. I saw one frame decorated with it from the 19th century.

Margaret,
I looked for a book I bought from Arnold Jacobs at Fine Gold Leaf a long time ago. I think it was called "The Art of the Painted Finish"

http://www.amazon.com/Painted-Finish-Fu ... 612&sr=8-1

I have it somewhere. I would suspect it might have some history.

I am not sure how much and what kind of information you are looking for on this topic, but I would suggest it goes all the way back to the Egyptians and maybe earlier.

Good luck,

Thank you for the reply.

I know that the history of real gold leaf goes back to the Egyptians, but not composition gold leaf surely?
