printing on glass

Post by megan child »

I am interested in printing onto glass and after discussing it with others (in my home town) some questions have been raised that I need to find the answers to.

1. Did I read correctly that I can I take my digital photos and using a flatbed printer, print directly onto the glass?
2. Is UV inks the best for printing?
3. If I kiln dry the printed glass piece how hot does the kiln need to be and for how long should it be kept at the desired temperature?
4. Can I silver onto of the printed glass once the glass has cured?
5. Do I need to clean it with any special products prior to silvering?

I hope you can answer my questions as I am eager to try it out.

Hi Meg,

if you have any art or sketches of what you plan on doing, post them as you may get more feedback.

Can you print directly onto glass, yes but.. what is your end use? Do you have a vendor locally that has a flat bed printer, let alone one that is willing to do glass with it.
Does your job warrant it? What is the size and purpose of the application and is it getting direct sun, or protected by an overhang?

I use a local printer for digital prints but it's not a flat bed, and uses solvent based inks. The quality of the prints is excellent. Life expectancy is said to be 7 years outside which is probably overly optimistic. I have several jobs that have been up for about 3 years and the colors are holding up well.

Forget the kiln. While it may be possible, the cost would be prohibitive.

What size print does your job require? If it's only in a section, mask off the section for where the print goes with vinyl, either high performance or calendared . Silver it, back it up and remove the mask. Apply the print over the clear area and that's it. If someone knows the link to the job Dave Smith did for the Indian restaurant, please post the link, as it's an excellent example of using a digital print in conjunction with silvering or traditional gilding. It may have not made it to the form but is in an issue of Sign Business last year.

Check out this thread and think of the letters on this link as a window for a painting or a digital print. This is a nice step by step Roderick posted that could be used for your project:
