Okay

Got some of that oxidized silver in...both in the red and blue....along with some instacoll (Erik) that I have never used before...

This leaf stuff looks pretty weird...(been told that it will only react to an alcohol based product in liquid form like shellac) but I am doing a patriotic piece and thought this might look pretty cool for an effect on glass....and I am wondering if there is anything wierd to look out for...

I have not completely decided on design yet because I am not sure of the effect but optioned for water gild over straight glass, embossed acid or damar, screened chromatic for a matte. Any suggestions from those who have used it?

and yes Erik...I have gilded a few wood pieces but have never been that impressed, trying many different methods to get a bright gild...but I am looking forward to seeing this stuff work...Thanks for the tip!

I love to Play!

Robert

Is that osidized leaf or powder?
The leaf loses it's shine and goes dark with water gilding. That worked out okay for contrast on what I was doing. It has actually lightened with age/tarnish. Kent Smith had success using Aquasize with blue oxidized leaf. It works ok on surface gilds if you keep in mind the color variations and work it into your design.

David

Thanks for that insight...wow...guess I am gonna just have to play....

The piece I am doing is for my little brother...He closed his practice and is now corrupting the young legal minds of America...The university is Lincoln Memorial University...

and I have been playing with a rebel theme but that might not play well with a union president included in the design...and it is in Knoxville, TN...boy is that an ultimate play on Civil War history...LOL
I just might have to do 2 of them...:)...One that is more politically correct than the other.

Anyway...The idea was to emboss or carve an eagle, with the rays in red and blue...stars around the picture of Lincoln, gold, but background in the blue...and or use it in a flag etc...
but will have to see which holds better, matte or bright...

or if I must ditch the idea all together!...:) I just did not want to throw a candy on first and try to get a bright gild over it.

I am open to suggestions.

Thanks
Robert :D

"One of the finest pictorials I ever saw was in Slat Lake City, almost thirty years ago. It was a large Lincoln head in black and gold. The window had been leafed solid and well burnished, then the details and shadows were scratched into the gold with a short fitch brush, and the whole job backed up with black."
A quote from Sign Painting Course by E.C. Matthews
