Esoteric sign supply

Post by Roderick Treece »

I was going through my business card archive and found a Esoteric sign supply card. Thought I'd do a shearch for the name

Fine gold sign company

and found this link,

http://www.esotericsignsupply.com/projects/

When I redid the shearch as
http://www.esotericsignsupply.com

It redirected me to this site
http://richengravings.com/

I called the number and left a message. It will be interesting to see who it is..

Hmmm and now they not only 'used' the name, but got three external links so the will be pushed upwards in the Google ratings.

I don't really have a problem with them using the name to direct traffic to their site. I guess that's a pretty smart business move - for someone to buy the domain name of a defunct business. (Of course, I've known instances of unethical practice like buying the domain name of an existing business who hasn't renewed their name, and then blackmailing into buying it back by directing their traffic to a porn site.)

But what does concern me is that they are displaying photos of the Esoteric Sign Supply store (which is not longer in existence) and also showing pieces which were at Rick's place when he was alive. At face value, it looks very deceptive. But there may be more to it than meets the eye so I'd want to learn more before jumping to conclusions. Like perhaps they are the ones who produced the pieces which were at Rick's. I don't really know who they are.

Interesting, to say the least.

What do you mean?, no longer in business...why just the other day I went to the Esoteric Sign Supply site.

http://www.esotericsignsupply.com/contact.html

Yep, the contact page is still up. Most of the links are dead. The "Home" heading at the top redirects you to the new "Rich Engravings" Site.

An indication that maybe the site has been sold to Rich Engravings.

Oh, and this page is also still up...http://www.esotericsignsupply.com/gluechipping/

And this one....http://www.esotericsignsupply.com/paint/

An online search attempt of Business Names via the California Secretary of State site was fruitless. Seems you cannot do an online search for Business Names, you download a pdf form, fill it out, and mail it in. Someone please fill me in on why they do it that way. Here in my state, we can look up business names online.

Here's what the manta site has to say about Esoteric....And it looks like Dave Glawson is or was the owner.

Here's Dave's profile....http://www.daveglawson.com/about.html

And finally, I hope, some site info....http://whois.domaintools.com/esotericsignsupply.com

and this tidbit of knowledge....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domains_by_Proxy

Robare,
More than likely, the Glawson brothers didn't want to pay to renew the domain name and it want back into public availability. It is also likely that Rich Engravings saw it was available and paid their $10 to get it. Some companies buy domains only to use the main page to create a bunch of links back to their main site to help with their Search Engine Optimization. They might get a little business off the links, but I don't think that is the objective in most of the cases.

Rick's old web host must not have caught the fact that no one is paying for the storage and have left some of his pages still on line, even though the main domain URL is being redirected to the Rich Engravings site.

In the State of Wyoming, you can register your business name, and in doing so, no one else in the state can use it. Conversely, if you don't register your name and someone else does register it, the odds are good they can make you change, even if you had it longer. When we have a new customer starting a new business, we always advise them to immediately register their business name with the state. At that point, they will find out if anyone else is already using it. That could save them a lot of money on printing and signs.

But the state does not monitor all the Internet names used in the state. There could be all kinds of conflicts as someone might have EsotericSigns.com and another might have EsotericSigns.net and yet another have EsotericSigns.biz. Worse yet, all of them might be in other states and even if Esoteric Signs is registered in California, I don't think there would be much they could do about all the other uses in other states.
