Procedure for laying gold

Post by DAVE SMITH »

For a while I have been meaning to put these illustrations up to show the layout and procedure to laying goldleaf. Everyone here has there way of tackling gold jobs but thought anyone new looking in might find this helpful and learn something from it.

Nice post David, what does the English word chilling mean in this sentence?
I do not understand the order of the second illustration.
When sizing for number 10, I can imagine I will destroy leaf numer 1, or am I missing something here?

Erik-
Figure 7 is gilding glass.
Figure 6 is surface gilding, laying the leaves when the size is at the correct tack.

Erik. The term chilling I think is when the size runs over a piece of gold that has already been gilded and is still drying. A streak of size runs down the gold and instanly chills that area and marks the gold, the streak turns matt instantly. Also streaks of size chilling (drying) in other areas will cause cloudy gilds. I use to hear the term chilling used by the signwriters when I was learning at the age of 16. Probably another word used for other countries though. I'm not totally certain but it does seem that this could be the reason. Sorry also ,forgot to say the other illustration was surface gilding...thanks Larry.
