Glue Chipping Project

Post by bob gamache »

Hey guys
Just wanted to share a few photos of a glue chip project I'm in the middle of.
The glass is 24" x 36". FWIW I double cut the design by hand.

Is the chipping complete or are there spots left unchipped?

Bob,

Have you read this post of mine?
https://handletteringforum.com/forum ... it=outline
I made some test with gold and silver and learned a good lesson: between gold and silver a dark colored (black is allways good) outline will pop out the design more.
Let me know what you think.

Two cents, from the end of the line.....

Firstly, nice design! I like that symetrical layout. Looking good!

Me. I woulda silvered it first. I would be fairly paranoid in
submercing the gilded area under all that water.

Having said that, Rick Glawson told me when silvering over any
previously done inscription, to outline the design in asphaltum,
then block in the whole area within the outline with asphaltum.
Essentially encapsulating the whole inscription with asphaltum.
The asphaltum repells the water and the silver will deposit right
up to the edge.

Outlining the gold with asphaltum will also give you the black
outline Erik mentions.

Perhaps Rod or Dave could throw in their two cents, then you'd
have six cents. (pun intended)....counting Eriks, would make eight... :D

Good luck, heh?

I had a couple of hours to work on this today. I took the well given advice and outlined everything with black. Thanks for all of the input and coments! I really appreciate it! The black outline really made it pop. I used gilders backup black with 1shot hardener. I also put some abalone in the 2 outside flourishes and sprayed a green and black gradient in the center panel. I backed up the shell with backup black and then sealed the edges real good with asphaltum. I think I'm going to leave 'service' like it is with just a black outline, I was going to gild it but had 2nd thoughts about it.

Looks beautifull.

I thought you were going to silver this piece?
If so remember that the one shot hardener will react with the silver and turn it into brown.

Thanks Jerry
Erik, Its going Monday to be silvered I should have it back in a couple of days.
I have a friend in Brooklyn NY who owns a large mirror shop. All he does is silvers glass all day, every day.
I've never had a problem with him & 1shot hardener turning the silver brown in the past.
What ever works for you! Thanks for the heads up though.

I finished this one a couple of weeks ago and I used hardener in the backup black and it came out great.

None.
I know he rubs the whole piece down with pumice first and then rubs it with jewelers rouge. He told me the old timers used to rub the backing paint with jewelers rouge to prevent any unwanted reaction with the silvering process. True or False, good or bad I really don't know. But it obviously works. Maybe thats why theres no problems. I'll have to ask him for details when I see him on monday and share the findings with you guys. Interesting though.

" He told me the old timers used to rub the backing paint with jewelers rouge to prevent any unwanted reaction with the silvering process. "

I wonder if rouge acts like kaolin powder to pull grease from the surface? It is a "very fine powder" - here is Wikipedia:

"A very fine powder of ferric oxide is known as "jeweler's rouge", "red rouge", or simply rouge. It is used to put the final polish on metallic jewelry and lenses, and historically as a cosmetic.
Rouge cuts more slowly than some modern polishes, such as cerium(IV) oxide, but is still used in optics fabrication and by jewelers for the superior finish it can produce. When polishing gold, the rouge slightly stains the gold, which contributes to the appearance of the finished piece. Rouge is sold as a powder, paste, laced on polishing cloths, or solid bar (with a wax or grease binder). Other polishing compounds are also often called "rouge", even when they do not contain iron oxide. Jewelers remove the residual rouge on jewelry by use of ultrasonic cleaning."

Lee, also wondering if polishing with rouge fills the paint pores as well as polishing the painted surface.

The result would increase the surface tension, which would repel solution gilding in the painted areas. In this instance it would be benifical.

Hi guys
I delivered the glass to be silvered. Ill pick it up early next week. Can't wait to get it back! I asked about the jewelers rouge and Danny was right on the money. "The result would increase the surface tension, which would repel solution gilding in the painted areas. "

Danny, someone did respond to the las vegas post. I'm not sure who did but Ann emailed me and said someone from this forum contacted her about the job. Real cool! Happy to pass it on!

Just wanted to share the finished product. Picked up the silvered mirror on Monday, framed it and delivered it.
The silvering came out perfect. I used 1shot hardener in the black backup paint (wasn't an issue)

Sure I paint thing for my amusement and then offer them for sale. A brushslinger could whither en die from lack of creativity in this plastic town my horse threw a shoe in.

Did it came out as you planned?
What are your wishes for your next project?

Thanks guys for the nice feedback! Means a lot! I'm Actually pretty much pleased with the way it came out. There's always something that could have been handled differenty, done better or tweeked out more! This was a commisioned job and is hanging in their office. In a couple of weeks I'm starting a small mirror for an english pub in nyc. Its still in the layout stage but ill post some photos as I make progress on it. Thanks for all the comments and input! This is a great forum!
