visiting USA in May

Post by BruceJackson »

Hi, I'm planning a trip to the US in May this year.

Will probably fly in to San Francisco for a 2-3 days, then spend a week in New York and finally on to Los Angeles for several days before flying home. (planning for May 9th - May 22nd)

Unfortunately, it's only a short trip of 2 weeks, so i can't squeeze in too much, but I'm going to cast around for any advice or "must do" suggestions. While in New York I'm going to visit Corning Museum of glass and the MET museum.

As much as I would love to visit the south and hear someone say "ya'all come back now, ya hear!" or gawp at the grand canyon, there just isn't time, so it has to be within day-trip distance of those three cities.

if you know of some outstanding examples of some fine gold leaf windows, I'd appreciate the heads-up so I can keep my eyes open if I'm in that area.

Found this site: http://www.glassgilding.com Seems that many of the windows are in the New York area.. Manhattan, Brooklyn & NJ. Maybe if you email the gilder, he can direct you to some good signs, or google some of the names on the window, and you´ll find it´s location! Good luck!

Simply love NYC, enjoy your stay and take some windows photos :-)

In some circles it would be said that the Town of Machine is worth a visit.
There's a couple (dozen) gilded signs and such.

It's about 30-45 minutes (depending on the time of day) from Frisco, its across
the mirror of water over in Hayward.

If you'd like to stop by, it would be alright....weekday preferred.

Marius the website is from our own Bob who honours us with his work on the forum. I know for sure he would guide Bruce through gilded New York.
The town of machine is closed two times out of two. So I think you must make an apointment first. 8)
Bruce have lots of fun out there, besides the town of machine, Dean Ross has a lot of beautifull glass pieces hanging, a lot of them skillfully made by John Studden.
If I am correct Disneyland in Annaheim has a lot of gilding, some of them made by the late Rick Glawson if I am correct.
Realizing we are in the 2nd renaissance of the arts.
Learn, copy and trying to improve...
Still in the learning phase ;-)

Bruce,
Sorry you don't have time to make it to San Diego. Don't miss a chance to meet with Larry White at the town of Machine. It will be well worth your time. While in New York try to get down to Ralph Lauren to check out the job we did last year.

Gold leaf windows outside by Bob Gamuch and large antiqued mirrors inside by me.

Great small pub called Freeman's Alley. NyNy

Hi Bruce,
John's right. I didn't think about it but he's less than an hour north of LA and Bakersfield is around 3 hrs north.Dean and John have an amazing collection of glass sign art there.
I'm 2 hr south so if you have the time your more than welcome to come on down to my studio for a tour. There's always the train as well.

Thanks Eric, still learning the names of the masters in here :-)

Roderic, It´ll be even more cool to visit Freemans Alley next time and checking out your work.. It´s one of my favourites bars in NYC. First time I was there we found the place by accident.. not easy to find if you don´t know the place tho, but defiantly worth looking for :-)

Me to the right on my way out of Freeman's..

Wish I can get back to NYC soon :-)

There are lots of Letterhead friends in the areas you will visit. I am sure between now and then everyone can help with tour suggestions, locations of good work etc. I doubt if much of my work in those areas still exists so I suggest you locals post some specific ideas for Bruce to make a memorable trip.

The "Alley photo" doesn't do Freeman" justice. It's a very cool pub at the other end of that alley. I did a room full of antique mirrors there a few years back. Well worth the visit.

Thanks for the replies. I've wanted to visit USA for many years, so I'm really looking forward to this.

Marius, Thanks. The funny thing is...I used to own the domain name!!!...I kept it for a few years and had two websites, one under glassgilding.com and and another in my business name, "goldreverre". Eventually decided there was little benefit in running two domain names and let it lapse. Bob took it up and I'm very pleased to see the name go to a good home...some great work on display there.

Larry, I do declare some circles would be given good advice in making that suggestion. I'll be taken that advice and I have already formed the intent to make a place in my diary for just such a visit. The most likely dates appear to be Thursday 9th or Friday 10th May.

Rod, I'll definitely be looking out for that Ralph Lauren shop. I already saw the photos and they are outstanding. A really fine body of work at RL and exactly the type of thing I want more designers to discover! It's work like this at high end aspirational stores that will build demand for our art. Will make sure to visit Freemans Alley....Perfect suggestion!

John, That's a really generous offer. You are one of the key people I was hoping to meet while in LA. I love to go to Bakersfield, but can't give a definite answer on that idea just yet. Even if time it too short to drive up there, I'd love to meet. Will be in touch closer to the time.

Hi Bruce,
Interestingly enough I got Bob in contact with the designer to do the on site work on RL and I did the mirrors. Small world. Once you know your dates in L.A. let me know and I will try and meet you and John.

Hi Bruce,

Glad you're coming to USA but disappointed I'll miss meeting you. Wave to Colorado when you fly over me twice.

Stopping in to see Larry (aka William Blake) in the town of Machine is a must. See if he can take you a few miles from his place to visit Steve & Mary Kersey at Kersey's Glass Works. He and I went over there last summer. Really nice people and their remarkable work may give you some ideas for the kitchen splashbacks you do. http://www.kerseyglass.com/

I did a blog entry last year where I chronicled a few weeks I spent in California, starting with a return to the Town of Machine and our visit with Steve & Mary. Warning: This is a LONG blog post! http://www.danseesestudios.com/blog/201 ... siums.html

One of my favorite NYC spots is the Rockefeller Center. Great art deco architecture, bas relief, gilding, etc. packed into a few square blocks.

Have a great time!

I would add to Dan's post for NY be sure you have a good city map, Grand Central Station, Metropolitan Museum of Art especially the Egytology exhibits on gold (Natural History Museum is also good if you like that), The Guggenheim Art Museum, The Whitney Museum always interesting, The Waldorf exterior and lobby but the rooms are fantastic as well, buildings around Gramarcy Park, wander Park Avenue from about 25th uptown and stop at Sepp Leaf as you go by between 26th and 27th with interesting viewing up to 70th or so. Never been impressed with Times Square but you have to see it to know why and go to the half-price line for a Boradway Show. When your feet get tired, take a cab not the subway unless you really know where you are going (medallion cabs are usually honest). Affordable hotels are near Harold Square or take a Port Authority Bus from Penn Station to Newark, NJ and stay near the airport where most hotels run shuttles to the bus stop.

Wave at us too as you fly over Colorado, on the mountainside just 40 miles southwest of Dan.

Great post Kent, Thanks so much.

I love Museums, so I'm really looking forward to the MET. For one thing, I want to see Dupas/Champigneulle glass murals that were on the cruise liner Normandie. You've given me a lot of good tips. Will look for accommodation as you suggested. From what I have seen of hotel prices, it's basically an expensive place to stay and you just have to accept that fact if you want to be near the action.

As for the New York subway, I'm looking forward to trying it. I read a really great guide describing the system. It seems the subway can be daunting to people, but this article is a real gem. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic- ... _York.html

Bruce,
Over the years the best value I've found in Manhattan is The La Quinta Inn. Very well located and my favorite part is it has a roof top bar that has an amazing view of the Empire State building. The Subway system is very easy to use as long as you know where you were you are and where your going. The hardest part for me is alway when I get off and come up to street level it is very disorienting as to which way your facing or where you are. It's hard to get a bearing on direction.
