Gilding workshop with a pinstriper from Oslo,Norway

Post by DAVE SMITH »

I finished up a gilding workshop a few days back with a lovely talented 29 year old man by the name of Błażej Ryszard Chlaszczak , Trying prounacing that name , i've been struggling all week! real name Richard! Here are some pictures of the workshop that we thought you would enjoy.

Will post some more images from Peter Mcullams trips this coming week.

Thanks.

Hope to see some of you very soon over in the States this coming weekend.

Very nice... as always.

Couple of questions.

(1) How many screens did it take to process those?

(2) The center panel. Is that a glaze backed up with leaf. And if so what is it or how did you mix it?

Well I guess that's rally four question.

Thanks guys, Tim, just the one screen was used for the gold leaf and then everything hand done afterwards. glaze is just mixed with turpentine and hand painted, there is no leaf on the back just a blend of black enamel to red so that it keeps a marroon colour and not a muddy brown.

hope that helps,

Dave

Robare, yes we acid etched and then gilded. everything else was put in by hand.

I'm working on a piece at the moment which has no screening, which to be honest i prefer. The workshops need to be screened due to time and of course some detail is just impossible by hand , i think the larger works are always better by hand, its nice to see that hand done look on the gold.

Thanks mate and thank you Jeroen, congratulations on your first child

Dave

So the glaze is just maroon lettering enamel water thinned with turpentine?

I'd love to be able to take a workshop with you but reality and responsibilities are in the way. All my knowledge comes from books and mistakes... some happy... some not so.
