Smith Tip or Glass

Post by Robert Schwieger »

Stumped today. 16x20 plate glass. Gilded 23K and used Smith Tip. Have used it previously with success. Gild was marked by numerous lines similar in pattern to parallel tip hairs. Was tip contaminated? I keep it in clean and secure place at all times. Was it a tinning problem? Can the tip be safely cleaned? The tip is a great tool and I don't want to damage it. Any ideas? Bob.

what are you charging your tip with to attract the leaf? Maybe you need to change it, or use much less.

Why are you tinning to water/oil gild, or using a tip to solution gild?

Gilding tips can be cleaned with luke warm water and a drop of Joy liquid detergent. Rinse well w/ water, and blot dry.

After cleaning, follow Pat's advice...
