While I was in Rochester for the British Letterheads meet I stopped by a pub (well actually a few...hic) to see how some antique signs I had photographed some years ago were holding up only to find they all had been replaced....there were 2 full fascia's. I can only imagine the new owners say something like "Lets give the place a facelift and get rid of those old signs" never realizing they were there before the first world war...probably since about 1890 made of the finest material and outstanding excellence in craftsmanship. The Salisbury on St. Martin's Lane is the only other example of this shops work I've seen in London and am willing to wager those signs were worth no small amount. The owners also would have almost no idea of the added value of restoration rather than the garbage bin. That sort of shortsightedness is all to typical these days. I wonder what happened to the P.T.Copperpot glass pieces from Glawson and Evans? Anyway here are the old and new.

Doug, thanks for the pub update. Did you think to inquire as to what happened to the old signs?

Hi Ron, I did ask at the bar but it wasn't worth pursuing...busy, the manager wasn't in that night and barmaid knew nothing about them other than they had just installed them 2 days previous

Absolutely heartbreaking, Doug.
This sign & the Salisbury & Bath House blew me away when I first saw them in Schwartaman's "DESIGNAGE" book. (Well, just about everything in that book blows me away.) Now I'm sorry I missed this one while in London last year (too much to take in during my short visit.)
