Glass Signs (Showcase your work here!)

Post by Roderick Treece »

I thought it might be nice to start a post where people could show their glass signs.

So lets see em!

So you see how this is gonna go....

Image

He, uh... he brought me, uh...Well, it was a present.

Mr. Dickinson.

Image

A present? ...yes, from a fella, name a Treece, Roderick Treece. He likes to be called Rod.

Image

Jenco?! From Lodi? Ya he's just the type to whip up a little ditty on the fly.

Image

Nobody? Is this the sign that will take me to the mirror of water?

Image

Aho William Blake! Lovely stained glass, just lovely! A gift, from Pat & Peggy. Aho!

Now they belong in my personal family collection.

Image

I'll trade you some beans for some tobacco? Or possibly a Baronian Mfg. sign for a Green Door Saloon sign?

Image

Well you asked me! How 'bout that! Six glass signs & 3 painted ones, all in one shot!

Image

You seen almost everything I got. No sense in postin' it now.

I just finished this job today.
American National Bank wanted their copper logo on 7 windows. The logo is made up of prismatic copper letters.
I first saw this done in an article in SignCraft several years ago where you do surface gilding, cut acetate masks and burnish the gold different directions to catch the light and give a prismatic effect. I did the same thing in reverse on the glass with copper leaf. The cool thing is that as you move around and view it from different angles, it changes as the light hits it and you can swear the letters are dimensional, but it's just a flat gild on the inside of the glass.

Very nice work Dan. Did you use the varnish technique or acetate way?
Great effect.

Some pieces I made a while back. the first one is a current job I am making at the moment a complete restoration i had one the same a year ago this is another panel which has to be copied exactly to it's original. All the bottles were carefully striped around the edges removing the old silver.one of those (knightmare jobs). the other panels are 14 and 9 years old.

A couple question for Dave Smith.
- How did you achieve the 3D dimensional look in 'Bull and Brush'
- I'm thinking you lay more gold than angel gilding. What is your
thinking there? Is there a preference?

Sure hope you are around for many more years. Incredible inspiration!

Hello Mark.
I hope to be around for a good number of years yet Mark. I came close a few weeks back when I hit a lampost at 30 miles an hour on my pushbike. A few bruises and slightly shaken but was able to ride home, other than that I reckon I should get to a ripe-old age. got to watch my diet though,I love food! Angel gilding is far quicker and a cleaner finish but there is not enough call for it to mix a batch up for the amount of glass that goes through these doors. I only use it occasionally now. Most of the work just needs goldleaf which is good enough for the reverse signs I make here. It's really all they ever used to use. The letters on the Bull and Brush were deep carved and then varnished ,once dry it was water gilded. Great effect for dimensional looks on glass.
Hope this helps mate
Thanks!!

Thanks Dave. 30 mph and a lamp post= a bad deal. Lamp post usually wins.

The OK Barber is from a trip up in Northern CA.and the A.J.Fisk , well you only get to see that one if you just happen to be doing your business in a certain Deaman's outhouse.

sorry for two images the same but was unable to remove the other.
Here is another photo. The word Upholsterer was acid etched upside down.It etched with a nugget effect, almost like chipping but somewhat nicer and more polished, reminded me of a piece I had seen at The Palace Saloon one of Rick's Fine Gold trips to Roger and Reta Grahams place. probably the same technique used there.....

Nice work Rod. I like the figures in the center. How did you do them? Reverse painted or affixed from behind?
Are those jewels around the outside or were those etched and then cleared before silvering?
It's difficult to tell. Either way you do fine work.

Thanks boy's,
The figuires are a digital print and the jewels were glued on after the background was mirrored. Then they were mirrored and backed up.
If you go to this forum you can see the whole process.
