Bruce Jackson's photo archive - 11 - Clunes

I thought it was time to take you back into sign history again.

Here's a small selection from Clunes, a Victorian country town with a gold mining past, some really nice old signs and unrestored shopfronts.

I always enjoy the historic signs. I am curious about the circle in the bottom photo.

Nice art deco design on that one. I love the way Stationery is written, even though it's a little rough in the quality of execution when you look closely.

The circle has a small painting of some books. Unfortunately I don't have a close-up but this is a crop from another photo more directly in front. It seems Robby G decided to leave the original window sign, simply putting a piece of paper in a rectangular gap in the sign. Possibly that gap was already there from a previous business change. I love the fact that this shop has three different identities.

A good number of signs in this town have used aluminium paste, including this one for stationery/newsagent. Obviously the local signwriter liked it a lot.

I have quite a few other photos of worthy window signs in this same town, but decided to add this one from inside the town hall, nearly 90 odd years old and still looking good. All the lettering is gold leaf.

I would have assumed a picture or perhaps a registry for the circle.

Interesting amount of asphaltum, more common in rural areas here in the US.
