Reverse Painted sign

I subscribe to the eNewsletter Antique Trader, and I saw this posted this AM - thought some of you might be interested, or perhaps know who the artist was that did it and the Pullman cars mentioned in the article -

Funny, not really, but serious funny. Windex the names and bump the price? Hmmmm. It really ought to sell now!

I'm going to continue to watch - just for fun.

Golden West

Some weeks back, it was suggested that I post a picture of what I'm doing with the sign artist skills that I developed over forty years ago. This was a recent piece of paper that I acquired through a friend from an Antique Mall. I don't like exploring malls for my old paper because I have to pay the...

GOOD INK

I recently was interviewed by the Billings Gazette about my latest adventure in art. You have to go to the photos to see how small my stuff has become, but my smiling mug is parked next to latest effort in the stamp related game: http://www.billingsgazette.com/news/features/magazine/article_ab04c906...

Anybody remember the Mural post?

I've looked back a year, but can't remember the title of the post. I believe it was a California city mural - some sort of an anniversary celebration - perhaps a Centennial? I'd like to find it. Anybody?

Dave,

I'm really curious about the brasswork - can I assume it was embossed before being mounted? I can't imagine a sign artist laying down on the job.

Re: H.H.Day and signcraft

Mike, Since the pencil is my only design tool and I don't subscribe to Signcraft, I'd surely appreciate any and all examples of the pencil sketches you could put up right here. I don't scoff at anybody who uses technology to do their design work and could do it myself if I had a mind, but I like my ...

I downloaded the image that you posted about a month ago. I used it for what you see here, as I've done with every other font I've looked at. I use a pencil for everything - and I really like this one.

LA Sign Artist?

I belong to the American First Day Cover Society and as such, I receive a bi-monthly journal called First Days . I opened the June issue this AM, and on page 51 is an article entitled 'Unexpected "Envelope Art" Discovery' by Michael Litvak. He found three framed groups of these envelopes i...

Gilding on old paper - with Wunda or Aqua Size

I'd like to do some raised letters on a piece of paper dated 1902. I know must of you folks do surface gilding on things a little larger than this, but I'm wondering about what kind of "raising" I'm going to get from either of these products. I've never used either, and have done no illumi...

Re: You will Enjoy Shorpy!

Wow. Talk about coincidence. I've been searching the web for reference photos for a delivery truck. I'm attaching what I have on the off-chance someone will know about vintage trucks, or at least more than I do at this stage of the game. I've inquired of every historical resource in the Spokane area...

Re: Frank Atkinson Books

Mike, I don't own a single sign painting book. I got my training on the job before I even knew how to read. I inherited my dad's kit when he died, but I also had one of my own which I still have - I just haven't used it in forty years. He had no books. He did subscribe to Signs of the Times, which I...

Frank Atkinson Books

Have the Frank Atkinson books "Atkinson's Scene Painting and Bulletin Art" and "A Show at Shocards" available reprinted? My Dad and I did shocards for local nightclubs in the 50's and 60's and I'd never heard of Frank Atkinson, although Dad did subscribe to Signs of the Times. Th...

Re: Letterhead Studios Design

Okay. Now I can be just a little critical... I think you should include more of the blue field on the flag. There just seems to be not enough of the blue field and white stars and more red and white stripes than it would if it were a 'real' flag. Just my two cents now that I've spent so much time lo...

Re: What does one use a syrup fig for?

Danny, To me, it's the only thing on the list that doesn't make sense, but perhaps C.W. Rank also ran the pharmacy in Virginia City. The other three items are related to the sign trade, and I haven't done the research at the Historical Society yet to determine who the sign artist was in Virginia Cit...

Dave,

Here's one from Budweiser... http://www.cnbc.com/id/25479137/?slide=3 With all your skills you ought to be able to grab it, clip it and insert. You might even be able to get a higher res scan from them if you explain you're only using the building.

Myself, I'd like to know a little bit about the three-story building depicted in the vignette. I thought at first that it was the Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton, MT, http://www.grandunionhotel.com/about-gr ... -hotel.htm but I think that was just because of the way the building is pictured.

What does one use a syrup fig for?

I found and purchased the piece of paper that's pictured here. I bought it because the items purchased (from a drug company no less) appeared very familiar to me. Does anybody know what the syrup fig would be used for? And when was the last time someone purchased 25 pounds of Yellow Ochre for 88 cen...

I shot McAfee over a year ago. I was part of a test team to select a new product for an enterprise of over 20,000 connected machines. McAfee lost. ESET NOD32 won - hands down. It has separate 'engines' that run as needed for web access, email (scans in and out) and file system scans. McAfee is a sys...
