Re: Gilding a Sunny, Sweaty, Frosty Window

Bruce Jackson backed a gilded window with copper leaf to dissipate heat from the strong Australian sunshine. You could try that with a good pencil varnish.

Re: Current clients looking for Gold-leaf signs

Doug, there are also gold leaf signs all around me here in London too. I'm interested in patterns of clients over time, but it's very difficult to put an exact date on signs that are in situe. If I just guess things and make my own opinions, they are ungrounded in facts and wouldn't have any academi...

Re: Current clients looking for Gold-leaf signs

That's great to hear you taking advantage of international trade. Your work is of a really high standard which must be hard to find. I bet the owner of the Forty-Seven is very proud. This is an aspect to craft I am interested in, working to the highest standard possible to produce work that will be ...

The Future of Hand Painted lettering with Gold Leaf

My final chapter of my dissertation on gold leaf gilding in signwriting is dedicated to the future; I would appreciate any views and opinions from craftsmen who use gold in their hand lettering work. With techniques and processes changing very little for hundreds of years, do you see any new technol...

Re: Current clients looking for Gold-leaf signs

Thank you for your responses, they are all greatly beneficial. Joe, you sound like you are very busy making those wonderfully carved signs. You must have a helping hand to produce that volume of work? Tyler, funeral homes are a new one for me. Thanks for your input. Marius, the bikes are awesome, th...

Current clients looking for Gold-leaf signs

Hey everyone, I'm writing my Dissertation at University on gold-leaf gilding. I'm looking to include experiences from craftsmen in the trade, I'm lucky enough to be working alongside Nick Garrett here in London. This has given me great insight, but just from one perspective. I have now used gold-lea...

Re: Signage at the Cock and Bull - Sutton

Wow that mirror looks identical! The print technician showed men's one screen printing she did on a window at Uni and it also had the jagged edges from the mesh screen. It's only noticeable up close and by those who care to study them in detail. So I think it's safe to say we are in te minority of p...

Re: Signage at the Cock and Bull - Sutton

I believe it's a silk screening process. I've been researching it some more. Designs can be painted or drawn up then made into a screen for multiple productions. Thanks for your reply!

Small world Jack! I did my national diploma and foundation courses at UCA! Great design & execution by the way! id also like to confess my love for the woman in the beige top :) It's a very small and connected world we are in. When did you study at UCA? I'm still there now. Right this second in...

Re: Copyright infringement, "sharing",and the internet

It's an interesting subject that you bring up, especially in the design world, where we rarely create something in it's entirety from scratch and imagination. I believe that the line of commercial gain is a good boundary to establish and maintain copyrights to. If I was using your photos without per...

Re: Conceptual Sign

Haha no, you are well off there! It's from the Latin term, 'Et Al.' Meaning and others. Meaning and other people, but due to aspects of typography being named after parts the body, I thought it was an acceptable use.

Thanks for your input and kind words however.

Re: Conceptual Sign

Thanks for your response. You're right, the word is 'Scientist'. The fact that you can still read it jumbled up is a part of linguistics that influenced the piece. I agree that there could be a little more white space around the top and sides, there is more than apparent on the cropped photo, but a ...

Signage at the Cock and Bull - Sutton

I came across some attractive mirrors at a pub over the weekend. When studying them very closely, I noticed that the shade was jagged along the edge, as though it was printed. Do signs like this get printed at all? The lettering is definitely hand drawn, as there are subtle differences in the letter...

Re: Conceptual Sign

So thanks for putting yourself out there. Always takes courage to invite critique. I could say more if I knew the purpose but perhaps you're asking us a different question. I'll attach a version of your photo, with the shading levels lightened in Photoshop which helps us view it a little differentl...

Re: Conceptual Sign

Thank you Dan for your input. Sorry the quality was so bad, I had to get a new battery charger for my camera, so was stuck with my phone to take photos. I waited until I could get better photo's before updating this post. You're right, it is painted on glass. I did it in reverse to leave the letteri...

Conceptual Sign

This is a conceptual sign that I've created for university this semester.

It has some hidden messages, and not so hidden messages.

Please comment on your views, thoughts and responses to the piece, I would much appreciate any feedback.

Re: Hello from London

It was sketched by the tattoo artist. He also sketched the fascia design which is also in gold leaf. I'll upload photos of that and the finished windows too. There were subtle tweaks that Nick made when drawing up the designs in situe, using his own experience and flair to bring the sketch to life. ...

Hello from London

Thank you to Dave Smith for pointing me in the direction of this wonderful forum. I'd like to share some work in progress going on in Notting Hill, here in the U.K. Sign Writer is Nick Garrett. I've just started to learn the trade. I'm currently studying Graphic Design at University for the Creative...
