Arthur Vanson

Most of you have heard of Arthur Vanson's passing by now. And most of you know him as a signwriter from England, but I wanted to remind you how hard he worked on his fonts. He was a perfectionist when it came to kerning and possessed an uncanny eye for balance and weights (which is so important and ...

Re: The $277,050 Calligrapher

Looks like I hit a nerve.

I hear where you are coming from Aaron, but my intent was to see which version people preferred.
Which version do you prefer Aaron?

Is the hand lettered version better than the font version?

Re: The $277,050 Calligrapher

Interesting points Erik. But I disagree... I'm ok with having them hand-lettered if the result is better. This is a case where I don't think it is. I think the right font (this isn't it) could be just as effective. Maybe when the White House is open again for tours, I will think differently. Until t...

The $277,050 Calligrapher

If you haven't heard... it was revealed recently that the White House calligrapher makes $277,050 a year. So a T.V. station in Virginia decided to make their own and compare. http://www.wusa9.com/news/article/248315/158/White-House-277K-Staff-Invitations-Vs-Cheap-Fake http://letterheadfonts.com/chuc...

Re: Ronan's vinyl Coat for exterior banner?

I'm impressed. That's some test Danny.

I can think of so many times I needed this.
I recall rolling on a coating that was just awful... used to pool up-- leaving bumps to paint over.
And it would give a slight yellow appearance over white.

This Bull Dog stuff sounds great.

Video Tutorial: 3D Letters & Effects

Corey Lewis and I just completed our tutorial series on creating a monogram logo design. We used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to create the following design: http://www.letterheadfonts.com/chuckdavis/hlf/monogramoval5.jpg While Photoshop allows you to create bevel effects, it doesn't do the...

Re: Transfering calligraphic skills to the brush

John, I'm just the opposite. I learned calligraphic letterforms after I learned to paint signs. I think what you may find most difficult, is to learn to retain that hand lettered appearance at larger sizes and while double-stroking your letters. Because usually, when you are doing calligraphy, the s...

Re: Creating This Font inspired by old billhead

Gilang, Congratulations. You did a very nice job with that style. The shadow is a nice touch and looks like it was executed well. I don't think we ever received any email from you though. I certainly don't recall seeing this. But I sure wish we had. :D If you are still interested in working with us,...
