Can anyone give me an idea where I can buy a sign kit. My old kit has bit the dust... it's time to get a new one.
Thanks,
Jon

Lettering Brushes?
I got some really great Handover Red Sable Quills from Rick. So it's been a long time since I've bought any brushes. Where are you buying brushes and what are you buying? For the most part I'm looking for some Rafael's or equal quality or better. Any help would be appreciated.

Getting the phone to ring?
I feel like I can paint with the best of them. And I think getting the "good" jobs is just a matter of numbers. The more people who call the better chance to sell an upscale sign. Especially if your look, samples and all reflect an upscale image. The big thing I've always been stumped abou...

One of the medical clinics in Long Beach, CA, Harriman-Jones, had a 7 story building near the freeway. At the top of the building they had some white channel letters in Optima, very upscale. The A's were backwards. The sign company built them that way. I wonder how many hands it went through without...

Letter Arts Review
I just got my new issue of Letter Arts Review. This is a magazine that deals alot with calligraphy. There's always great articles, but this is 60 pages jammed with two or three examples per page of great calligraphic artwork. And man is this ever artwork. All hand done with pen or brush or even a st...

The thing I like about Adobe Illustrator is the Pen Tool. It's very powerful for producing original letterforms. I usually draw my words out in pencil on a light table, scan it into Photoshop, then use that scan as a template layer to draw over the top of with the pen tool. Great feature that I'm su...

A hollow ground tool is not supported at the cutting edge the same as a flat bevel. That said I use a Tormek grinder to shape or grind my angle. It's a slow grinder cooled by water so there's no chance to burn the tool. For honing/sharpening I use a Koch Thermal Reactive Sharpening System. This is a...

Hey Mike, I've got one of those graphite mahl sticks too. It's made from a fishing rod blank. I put a cork fishing floate on both ends and dipped each cork in that rubber material that they use on plier handles. One rubberized cork rests on the piece I'm working on and the other ball is cupped in my...
