Re: Alf Becker alphabets
Hi Dale, I think you might struggle to find a copy , as I am aware ST only printed 3000
copies , although it sold out they did not re print, a few lucky people have it but most have a xerox copy. The copy I have is the 320 alphabets taken from ST each month from 1932 to 1957
Cheers Terry

Hi Danny Since 9 11 oil based paints and varnishes cannot go via air mail . We did a gilding job in Madrid a few years back and had to source le franc locally in Spain. On the supplier side we do have a few good ones here in the uk I get most of the signwriting and gold leaf from Wrights of Lymm , H...

For starting out the materials are few, black paint for your outlines and back up ,gold leaf , oil size or gelatine if you want a miiror finish and varnish to back up there are a few suppliers here in the Uk which is not that far from you although I am not sure what paints can be posted. Just arrived in this morning , made my day, it is very neat and compact a few bits inside, some intenso black still soft in the tube and the previous owners card, the phone code on that indicates that this was in use before the late 1950s when the new codes came in google search did not reveal any m...

Got my Sign work on TV
Landed a nice job with the BBC last year for a period drama which is being shown on Sunday nights. Called THE VILLAGE it is a story of one mans life in a Northern village spanning the whole of the 20th century. All the signs were hand painted. I did not get much input on the designs or colour scheme...

That's a great link Dan The library at Trinity is well worth a visit if you go to Dublin, I was lucky in that my eldest daughter did her degree at Trinity so we visited the library several times over the 4 years she was there. As a student she could get us in for free, the book itself is in a low li...

Re: The Future of Hand Painted lettering with Gold Leaf
I think one of the main problems for the craftsmen of the future will be the lack of materials (mainly oil based paints and sizes) We had the old le franc size it did it's job , you could rely on it being ready on time , Now you just don't know where you are with it. They changed the 12 hour because...

I have bought from Wrights of Lymm for 35 years without any problem on any product. A few points on the gold, You can buy as many books as you like the price of each book is the same no charge for breaking a pack so if you want 3 or 17 the cost is per book. Also they offer a service on transfer (pat...

Hi Mike
I take your point on the font, we have been seeing it for at least a couple of years now i am still not liking it. I think for most here it is just too far away from where we are in our swirly scrolls and busy designs. Though the oympics are a refreshing change on the TV
