Thanks Rich It's not acid etched. It's sandblasted, was deep etched on the outline. Then I use some garnet medium used in water jet cutters and frosted the letter face. Used XX pale gold powder on the outline and yes variegated on the face. Yeah I was happy with the ribbon when I flipped it around. ...
Here's a piece I made up... Cigar is a race horse stable colors were Red, White and Blue. The frame is from an old lobby show card display I picked up from the 30's I trimmed to fit.
Ok one of my gold tips is having a bad hair day. What the best way to wash it. It's a single thickness Luco bought back in 82. I tried the size bath but did not help.
I need some suggestions. For decades we hand lettered Mags but now getting One Shot to stick to them has become and issue. I am making a magnetic directory. The individual tenant slats will be Mag material painted dk gray (one shot w/ hardener) Then plotter-cut lettering. I have had paint peel up w...
Are you hand cutting your mask? As it looks like your using finished mirrored glass for some of you work. If you would... tell us how your working your design from the backside. How are you transferring the details of your designs?

Very nice work. I hope you continue to share your work here. And would also like to know how you finished the blue and red backgrounds and more on how you do your details on the scroll work.

I put some work into the needed changes from the prototype. And I'm happy to say the new jaw geometry grips tighter on either whole blades or pieces. SUNP0131.JPG 1/2" diameter handle with a length of 4 7/8" +or- I'm not running a cnc or vmc these are handcrafted. Anyone have interest PM m...
Well here is a working prototype of my designed blade holder. blade holder.JPG Seem to hold well both small pieces as well as whole blades. I placed some masking tape down and used the tool to remove it, doing some with both blades... work very well. blade holder2.JPG Aluminum construction. Will mak...
Hi, Tyler ! I used destilled water and gelatin. Size poured in plastic cup. I heat it in microwave to 40-60 C. I did not wipe the size. I just smear brush on glass. Then i put leafe gold on glass. And wait some time. Then I polish with cotton. I tried to water after application of gold leaf above, ...
Andrey, What size is your leaf and what brand? Also what type of water are you using and in what type of vessel are you heating your size in. How hot did you get the size? What are you using to mop on your size? Have you tried taking hot water and flooding the gild? Sometimes you can remove cloudine...
Castings you say? I've figured it for a straight forward mill and turn job. I've been planning on making a set of small.. medium and large for a while now. But been using pieces of dowel rod slit on the end with copper tie wire and some glue to hold blades.
So it's a pan face... matters not. By flipping it over... you take what was once the top of the sign face and make it the bottom. So if the ghosting read MOM it would now look like WOW.
But then you place your new graphics on it would not jump out as much as it will if not rotated.
So the glaze is just maroon lettering enamel water thinned with turpentine?
I'd love to be able to take a workshop with you but reality and responsibilities are in the way. All my knowledge comes from books and mistakes... some happy... some not so.
You removed the old graphics but have you cleaned the panel? All outside signs will get environmental haze film on them. I've found that washing the face with Simple Green and a scotch brite pad makes a big difference. Won't remove UV imprint but removing the grime and flipping the panel is standard...
Well two things come to mind. One the temp it's keeping your paint in a plastic state and weak bond with glass. I believe Robare is correct most if not all auto glass has a performance coat on them to help shed dirt... like rain x plus or such. You can also try placing the car out of direct sunlight...
I've use Type F transmission fluid for the past 28 yrs. Clean brush in Mineral Spirits drip in ATF pallet on flat glass to work out heel. Re wash in Spirits... dip in ATF pallet in and set in tray.
Andrey So you are gilding the etch... I seen the unpainted P and part of the M and thought otherwise.. you must of been antsy do move to the next step  . So it's gold on base... like I said I think some one here tried water gilding and commented it was not really good for that. Maybe they'll po...
I have in the past backed up leaf with 1 Shot and never had a failure of that nature. It looks like you are changing the inscription on a vintage glass plate not following the old acid etch in a restoration effort. Would like to see a front photo of the glass as it looks interesting from the backsid...
The Agony and the Ecstasy starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo I believe that's the film... I seem to recall his apprentice pouncing holes with an awl. One thing I'd go with an opaque projector over and overhead any day of the week. I've used opaque projectors for years... quick way to take a sk...
