Re: Latest glass signs

I like to make a water size that looks dirty brown by using watercolor pigments and dish soap. The dish soap traditionally is used when water gilding over paint or clear varnish when doing two tone gilding. I do my antique gilding with the glass laying down flat. I wash the size on and give it a sla...

Re: Photographing glass signs and mirrors

If I were to buy lights now I would go for LED light panels instead of incandisent bulbs. Their inexpensive and give plenty of light.I will try and find some info about them for you.
As for the back drops I use medium grey with a texture painted on it and black. I have white but never use it.

Photographing glass signs and mirrors

As anyone that has ever tried to photograph a gold leaf glass sign or mirrored sign knows it is one of the most difficult things to do. Having some commercial photographic experience from my college days has helped me a bit but mostly it's trial and error in finding out what works and doesn't work. ...

Re: Latest glass signs

Hi Tyler, Glad you like the signs. Some times a glass sign or mirror is very easy to photograph in it's natural setting within my studio. But most times I have to set up back drops and lights to get a quality photograph. I am going to start another thread to deal with this subject so take a look at ...

Re: Glass Signs (Showcase your work here!)

Been a busy month here in the studio. These three signs are for one client. There is one more in the group that I will be working on this week. Had to spend some time to get set up to expose my own screens so hopefully It will be a big help to the process.

Re: Which comes first the mirror or the sign?

Hi Megan,
I would
Mask the glass
Screen print
Cut your chipping area out and weed
Chip
take off mask
Reprint design

Your print my come off if you print before chipping. The cleaning process for asphaltum and chipping is hard on paint. I haven't used asphaltum to chip in years.

Re: visiting USA in May

Bruce, Over the years the best value I've found in Manhattan is The La Quinta Inn. Very well located and my favorite part is it has a roof top bar that has an amazing view of the Empire State building. The Subway system is very easy to use as long as you know where you were you are and where your go...

Re: Cutting glass with scissors ?

I had a great phone call from Kevin Betz awhile ago . He mentioned to me that as a young man he had attended a few of Rick's Conclaves with his dad.At the Conclave he asked if anyone knew you could cut glass with scissors and demonstrated it for the group. The next year he attended the meet only to ...

Kevin,
Sounds good. Best thing to do is call me so we can talk about what you want to do. I would plan on at least 3 to 4 days to make something nice. Where do you live ?

Re: Glass Signs (Showcase your work here!)

Hi Kevin, I use 1oz dry weight glue to 2oz water. There are many ways to glue chip. Best thing to do is do some reshearch on the forum and look at Rick Glawsons write up about it. There are also a few good books written about how to glue chip. Good luck. You are also welcome to come to my studio for...

Re: Custom Glass Signs

Here you go. The main copy is oil gilded using crushed up and scumbled Paladium, Silver and very antiqued silver leaf. The border is copper leaf and the outside mirroring is 12ct white gold. I really like the way you do your heavy antiqued mirrors with water gilding. Maybe I'll have to come back ove...

The "Alley photo" doesn't do Freeman" justice. It's a very cool pub at the other end of that alley. I did a room full of antique mirrors there a few years back. Well worth the visit.
