Re: asphaltum............
Having used asphaltum in printmaking classes as a acid resist on copper and zinc plates we successfully added turps in small increments and allowed the asphaltum to absorb it overnight. Stirring the mixture and adding small amounts of turpentine until it reached the desired consistency was the basic...

Re: Source for more exotic variegated gold leaf
Thanks for the information. I agree that current variegated leaf has a very predictable pattern and can be quite monotonous, particularly on large areas. I have earlier work from the 1960's that shows a randomness in the pattern that I feel is more desirable and I will continue to search out some of...

Source for more exotic variegated gold leaf
Most variegated gold leaf comes in the basic red, blue green and black. Is there a source for more exotic variations of the variegated leaf? Variations can be created with glazes but looking for other sources. Bob

Vinyl on convex glass
Looking at a number of 3'x3' convex glass panels to be gilded and wish to use computer cut vinyl for background black (gilder's black) probably applied with a roller and subcontracting this part out. Being BCS (before computer cut stencils) I would like to know which vinyl is a good choice...one tha...

Re: Glue chipped glass
Of course. I should have suspected this since the overall chip pattern was so consistent. I did find that on a previous project this "commercial chip" glass provided an interesting variation when it (the commercial chip) without gilding was overlaid on a brightly burnished glass piece whic...

Glue chipped glass
Just curious. While recently completing a gilded glue chipped project I decided to gild a small piece of commercial chipped glass from a stained glass outlet. The difference was remarkably noticeable. The commercial piece gild did not have the bright quality of the traditional flat glass piece I had...

Gold leaf on glass versus vinyl gold products
As a Steve Parrish era artist I would appreciate any input which supports the fact that genuine gold leaf on glass is superior to the vinyl gold products. My portfolio of glass examples and work shown on this site do a fine job but frequently clients can only see price. Thanks for any assistance in ...

Using TZ emulsion and applied as usual. For small jo...

Trying to resolve the glass glue chipping concerns such as delayed and partial chipping I conducted some comparison tests on a current project. The short answer to the problem is simply "the glue". I did side by side comparisons of two different hide glues. Both examples were preceeded by ...

Glue Chip glass
Just curious about glue chip. Having success with chipping but invariably need a second chip to eliminate all of the frosted areas. 80% to 90% chip with first chip including some rather large (but desirable) chips. Chipping follows applying glue mix (1:1 1/2) to warm glass, allowing 4-6 hours at roo...

Glass Gild Texture
Thanks for the input. I have always used Manetti 23K, fresh distilled water and gelatin sheets from Letterheads (the sheets stored in air tight bag). The problem appears to be after the second gild but not uniformly on the glass. The second gild brightens nicely but the patch areas do not match the ...

Glass gild texture
This may seem unimportant however I would like to know the reason for glass gild which shows a very fine "texture" appearance in the gold. This occurs on occasion after the second gild (patching) has dried and a final "wash" with boiled water. The second gild brightens the gild n...

Hello. As advised, I simply continued the process with the original glue in place. Worked fine. My concern has been expressed by so many when we live in an area that has relatively high humidity. Advice needed. Having completed approximately 75% of a glass piece chipping, the humidity and heat were interrupted for 10 hours. Which is the preferred method to resume chipping? Simply resume the process or remove glue and apply new glue to unchipped area with proper heat and humidity. This is a m...

Painting on Screen Doors
I too was fascinated by the logos on screen doors that I noticed when growing up. Rainbo bread was the most popular. I had no idea how these were produced but as a college student I tried versions of this in screenprinting classes in the 60's. I recall seeing serigraphs (screenprints) on paper produ...
