P.S. - They spelled your name wrong at the end of the video.

Leave it to a signman to point out the misspellings!!

After looking at the Virtual Tour, one thing stood out, Tod. You are not only actively involved in the acquisition of the pieces, finding the right location (and all the related activities), and securing corporate sponsorships, you are also pounding nails, screwing in light bulbs and getting paint u...

Tod, I have no doubts that ST will put Letterheads in the best light possible - and put on the type of meet that satisfies all comers. Coupled with your own magazine's anniversary, the new American Sign Museum and the privilege of hosting an International meet, it's almost a surefire guarantee that ...

There you go, Ray!! Straight from the "horse's mouth". If I have paint questions, I too ask Kent. As I said to him this morning, he is encyclopedic in his retention of all things 'paint'. Judi says he seems to forget the little things. Or does he??????? :) Every third word? Shoot, Ray, I g...

Ray, Chatted with Kent Smith this morning about something unrelated - but did squeeze in the question about oil primer - latex topcoat. Answer? We're using the wrong terminology. Latex is not latex anymore - it is waterborne ACRYLIC latex - which sticks to absolutely everything. That's why it works ...

No need for me, John. David and Ray cleared it all up for you. I know the latex over oil doesn't make sense - but that's what the California Redwood Association suggests - and it has worked well on over 1,000 sandblasted or carved redwood signs we've made over the last 22 years. Latex over OneShot i...

I also like to see explanations for certain decisions rather than "here's what we did". For instance, the primary reason for using an alkyd - or oil based primer on redwood is to stop the migration of the tannic acids in redwood that come to the surface after priming. In fact, we tint our ...

Well said all. Mike, your last comment was especially well put. The people who post here ALL must be included. I think Mark's post is especially valid as he is such a force in our craft. The term 'centering' also seems especially accurate in what I suspect is Mark's desire to discuss matters of the ...

Ditto to what Ray said - you seem to feel a sense of obligation, Mike - and I think you should just go with it. I can't contribute so much since I'm so responsible for my business running smoothly - and it takes a lot of work to keep 4 guys busy. But if I were in your shoes I would try to do as much...

I could sit and read comments from Mark and Dan all day. What profound thoughts!! I am honored to know both of you. Irony? You can buy computer fonts from Cabarga. Mike Jackson - great analogy re: the preacher and the congregation. Back to a point I made in the last post regarding the definition of ...

All outstanding posts - with Dan Seese bringing them all together with eloquent references to meaningful work. I am as proud to be associated with a group of craftsmen who at least TRY to balance between commerce and passion as I am anything else in my life. (I hope other BB's will take heed of this...

Mark, But at what point does commerce - and providing a decent living for your family - intersect with passion and the desire to create something tangible and expressive if technology and the use of it to make a profit dictates our very survival as sign designers? That's the real quandary isn't it? ...

Hi Jill, We seldom paint with anything that 'hot'. Most of our stuff is water-based or OneShot type stuff. Mactac works very well for those things - as Robare suggested. The lower tack works very well on most applications - but I did say I hadn't used it in every application. I am pleased to know th...

We have had incredible luck with Macmask from Mactac. I don't like any of the other Mactac products - but this mask kicks butt. Gerber stinks compared to it - no kidding. I won't go so far as to say it works best on every application because I haven't tried it on everything - but we've V-carved wood...
